Default Oil drain problems

Last weekend we had a work session ( West KY Region MARC ) . We were servicing cars and on Mary Starnes car we could not get the drain plug to unscrew ,it just turned in place. Seems that the bushing in the pan is slipping . Any ideas on how to proceed ? I know oil pan will have to come out ,BUT how to get oil out so it won't make too big a mess . Also any suggestions on how to fix slipping bushing. Thank's Bubby Sharp in KY

After you remove the pan and clean it up, the threaded insert that is spinning can be silver soldered or brazed. There are replacements inserts available from Model A parts suppliers if the threads are messed up, and come with new drain plug.

Bubby,
Your filler tube is press fitted in and could be coaxed out. Once it's out, try a suction gun, that should drain the oil off. I've seen many oil pans brazed around the drain hole. Good luck. Pete

If you have a wire welder, just put a couple of tac welds on it and screw out the drain plug.

Might try to drill a small hole into the insert that turns so it overlaps with the pan and put a screw in to hold insert until you remove the plug.

The small hole should be easy to repair when you replace the insert.

Might be a little messy with leaking oil ... but wire welder idea is even better.

I've pulled the pan a few times without draining the oil. Turn front wheels all the way to R or L to get tie rod out of way. Remove all but two center side pan bolts. Place jack under center of pan protecting paint with board. Loosen remaining two bolts a couple threads so you can slide putty knife around gasket to loosen. Lower jack while holding pan tight against block with other hand ( I prop my elbow on a 2x4 to hold weight of pan). Slowly lower pan as level as possible,(the pump will guide it for the first inch or so). Then drop the front to slide forward to clear the wishbone. It can be tilted a bit without spilling.

I had the same problem. I drilled a hole in the plug to drain the oil. I removed the pan and brazed the threaded insert to the pan andthen brazed the hole I drilled in the plug and put it all back together. While the pan was off I cleaned up the pan and checked the main and connecting rod bearings.
