Default 50's Fords in old movies

So the wife and I love watching old SyFy's from the 50's. This beauty is from "It Came from Outer Space" I believe it's a 53? Lot of scenes of driving it out in the desert. So am I the only one who focus's just as much on the old cars as the movie plot

I notice some too. In "Them" the police and others drive early 50s Fords.

HIGHWAY PATROL - MERC

PERRY MASON - LINC/BIRD

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

LEAVE IT TO BEAVER - FORD

ANDY GRIFFIN - FORD PI

I read where Broderick Crawford was written out of one season and they started using MOPARs as the long whip antenna on the MERC was not tied down to the drip rail and when in one episode where he made a felony stop, he jumped out of the car and that antenna began beating the hell out of his fedora and head.

He even drew his service revolver as he thought he was being bush-whacked. I think he also soiled his undies but the news article did not go into detail

Took him a full season to heal and grow some hair back ...

An old TV series "Highway Patrol" starring Broderick Crawford shows on network TV around here weeknights at around 3:00-3:30AM. I believe they started filming that series in 1956. The show features a lot of 1956 Mercury Monterey 2-dr sedan police cars as well as Buick and Oldsmobile police cars. There's lots of '55/56 Ford cars, '54/55 Lincoln cars and other favorites to see in that show.

Yup, I always notice old cars in the movies from the 50's. I, too, enjoy them as much as the show. One that makes me chuckle is the Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman..... lots of Chrysler cars in that one, but when she picks up the 57 Plymouth and drops it, it has turned into a late 40's Woody of some kind. How am I not supposed to notice that?!?

One thing that'll bug me, is when a newer movie is supposedly taking place in the 50's and they have a car that is supposed to be period correct, but it hasn't come out yet for a couple more years. Guess the "kid" movie producer couldn't care about getting that right!

So in the credits on the old 50's TV shows, It shows the different manufactures used to pay and supply their cars for advertising. So at some point, Mr Cleaver started driving a Plymouth. Perry Mason almost alway drove a convertible , along with Paul Drake. Yup, T-Birds and Lincolns. Still watch a lot of the old black & White shows & Westerns.........but dang, no old cars!! Except in the Roy Rogers show!

The car in the movie is the same one I have here except mine is not a convertible. I also remember an episode of the Andy Griffith Show where Barney bought this car (eighther a 52 or 54) from this old lady that told him the car was in excellent condition. I guess he had heard of the story that says, this car was owned by a little old lady that drove it very little and very slow and is in great shape. He got taken by the little old lady.

Good one, Ellen Corby was the old lady even back then.

There is a long running thread on the early V8 forum featuring Ford flatheads in the movies. I've contributed a few there as I'm always watching out for them in the old movies and tv re-runs.
Like this 54 Ford in the movie "Highway Dragnet".

I take interest in the fleet cars of the era...as seen in movies.

Cop cars in movies '54 and later were often Fords. Before that, they were often Nashes.

Taxies in the late forties/early fifties were often DeSotos.

Just finished watching a 1949 movie she was in, Madame Bovary, and although Corby was playing a old woman, she was in fact only 38 y/o. She looked 60!

Some people are like that. The Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) was only 37 when The Wizard of Oz was released...while beautiful Billie Burke, who played Glinda (The Good Witch of the North) was 55. Go figure.
