Can anything be done with this axle?
As some of you know Im currently rebuilding my diff, I thought I had acquired another axle however it to looks to be shot. Attached is a picture of mine and as you can se the treads are gone I wont use it again like this. Is it possible to build this up with something like TIG and re thread again , or will it not stand up to the amount of force needed to do up the nut? Failing that anyone have a good 37-40 , 16 tooth axle they would be willing to sell and send to Australia?

Re: Can anything be done with this axle?
You could try a Die nut to see if the thread will clean up . 16 mm will be close to UNF 5/8 and may go on tighter .Or use a Med soft rod Mig / Tig and build it up then turn it and re thread it .These are just some suggestions .

I would change it. If repairs fail you could be playing with your life. That's just my honest opinion.

Re: Can anything be done with this axle?
it could be saved if you have a good machine shop in your area, it can be chucked up in a lathe and the end welded with a wire welder and then turned down and re threaded, I don't know the cost for that over where, I think your best bet is to take old col up on his offer might be the cheapest way out, you then could have the other one repaired when ever

Re: Can anything be done with this axle?
TIG weld it with 4130 rod, remachine it and keep it for a spare.
Will probably be better than a new axle. |

Pete, do you or would you offer this service as part of your cam grinding business?

Re: Can anything be done with this axle?
Here's something that I've done to save a bunged up axle. Get a 5/8" x 18 (?) die and using a grinder, split it
the die in half. Assemble the two pieces of the die on the inside part of the thread of the axle. This gets to the part of the thread that you want to correct to. I then put a box wrench or maybe a vise grip onto the die and carefully spin it off, this takes a careful touch... And, I would agree that a new axle would be the best repair. Karl |

Re: Can anything be done with this axle?
I worked in a hydraulic shop as a machinist and welder and have welded up many cylinder rods and rethreaded them. If you go that way chuck up in lathe and turn it down be low the thread than weld it up, let it cool on it's own than re thread it.

Re: Can anything be done with this axle?
.....and THEN, after the "re-thread" (in the case of an axle like this), what about the factory-like heat treat? DD

Re: Can anything be done with this axle?
I would replace the axle and also consider adding a set of safety clips or safety hubs to keep the brake drums from coming off in case of an axle failure. If I tried any sort of a repair I would definitely run the safety clips or safety hubs.
