40 Rear Shackle Bushing Removal?
I am trying to remove the original rear shackle bushings from the spring ends and having a *ell of a time. I have been chiseling on one to get it out all day with no success. Anybody have the hot ticket for removing these stubborn bushings? The spring is out of the car and on the work bench. I have chiseled down one side of the bushing but it doesn't loosen up. That took 4 hours of chiseling! Must be an easier way. How about some heat?

put a torch or even a benzol torch to it just let the rubber burn out. hit the center piece out. now remove a hack saw blade from your hack saw. put it through the bushing shell. .conect it to the hack saw. now saw through the shell to you hit the spring. remove the blade now collasp the bushing & drive it out.

Re: 40 Rear Shackle Bushing Removal?
No, they are a piece of cake when done with a hacksaw groove, then a chisel. They come right out. Take your hacksaw apart, feed the blade through the hole, reassemble the blade to the frame. Saw a pretty good groove in the bushing shell. Remove it and then follow the groove with a chisel. It will split and come right out. Takes 5-10 minutes per bushing. If you encounter a stuborn one, do it again 180 degrees apart and it will definitley come apart. Most don't need the second groove. Even on the car, it was easy using this method.
Decided to use polurethane instead of nylon though. The nylon has no side to side give at all. I don't like rubber because it tears away from the bushing, especially in a rotating leaf spring eye. Last edited by philipswanson; 10-20-2018 at 01:18 PM. |

They do suck, almost seems welded in. Not an easy job. Glad you got it worked out. . Last edited by Tinker; 10-20-2018 at 11:02 PM. |
