Default 33 Harsh noise

My 33 has always had a very aggressive noise during heavy acceleration not unlike an exhaust rubbing on the chassis or body. I even installed new engine mounts as well as G/Box mount done by Lawrie. It just seems like the motor is bolted direct to the chassis just like my old race car was.
My question is The engine & gearbox are rubber mounted to the chassis but, the anti chatter bars are not therefore a direct contact to the chassis.
Am I missing something or could noise be transferred through the bars.

If that engine is properly balanced like I'm sure it is, and there is no "miss" in any of the cylinders, I can't imagine what vibration there would be to transmit through the anti-chatter rods. Maybe just turn the radio up a little louder? DD

Check all the exhaust mounting brackets and rubber mounts between the brackets and the chassis. All should be rubber mounted with no bracket metal touching the chassis. Regards, Kevin.

How about track back to the last thing you fine tuned or worked on the car.
This can often be the case if the problem has only just surfaced. I find this is a good way to start off the fault finding process.

Check what wrench is missing from your tool box. You might find it before the noise disappears. :

My wife has come up with a suggestion. "remove my hearing aids"
I'm also going to check out an exhaust shop, the muffler on the car looks like it should be on a Cat D9.

Just checked the anti-chatter bars on my 38 and they go directly to the chassis, no rubber. It is a little noisy during heavy acceration but I never thought much of it. On the other hand I don't have anything to compare it to and don't know any different. You would think they would be rubber mounted.

Is it only under heavy acceleration or does it happen any other time? Hope you get it figured and is a simple fix.

All the best,
Will

Will

The whole idea behind the rods is to SOLIDLY MOUNT to the chassis so as NOT TO ALLOW ANY fore and aft movement of the engine/trans assembly which is mounted on rubber (flexible) insulators. DD

Will it's always had this noise since I purchased it. Over a few years it's had a rebuild of motor, gearbox, rear axel,& several other mechanical repairs & noise always stayed the same. If I punch it up to 55-60mph the noise (grumble) stays there until I back off a bit & cruise at 55 with no load.
I've tried to compare it to Lawrie's which is a lot quieter even with his larger engine.
Maybe I just remove my Hearing Aids

That symptom of the noise diminishing when you back-off a bit sounds like something that happens when a pinion bearing is fubar, and THAT ain't cool! DD

I would wager the center bearing on the drive shaft. Just a guess but we all are guessing without hearing it in person. I'm not saying that Kpars' description isn't accurate.

I think Lawrie could be onto something with the 11A advance....try a 68 advance and see if it improves. A quick test without removing the distributor would be to retard the distributor from where it's currently set, [take note of where timing is set so you can return it to same place], and take car for a spin. See if the harsh noise improves...
No centre bearing in torquetube.
