Clutch Help
Hi,
My son and I have recently acquired a 1950 Custom Deluxe project. It has been sitting in a barn since 1965 when the farmer needed to pull the engine to use in his grain truck. We are now putting the engine back in but the clutch is missing. We have a limited budget for this build and can get a good used clutch assembly from a truck with the floor shift. Will this clutch fit the car? The car has the 3 speed overdrive transmission. |

Re: Clutch Help
Are you saying everything is there except the clutch disc and pressure plate? The truck could have an 11 inch clutch and you should probably use a 9-1/2 or 10 inch clutch. Where are you located? Any chance you can post a picture of what you do have?

Re: Clutch Help
The last thing you want to install is a used clutch and pressure plate assembly. Bad idea.
In the end you won't be saving any money if you find the used set up to be faulty. Folks don't usually save used clutches. Save up some dough and buy new. You will happier. |

Re: Clutch Help
Like posted above, the first thing you need to do is determine the clutch size you need? And if you need just a clutch disk or a disk and pressure plate assembly. And maybe a throw-out bearing.

Most likely it has the "Long" style clutch. I agree with the above, contact Fort Wayne Clutch. They have the whole package at a very reasonable cost, including the pilot bearing, throw out bearing, alignment tool, disc and plate. Rough up the flywheel surface with a scotchbright if you find no reason to need resurfacing the flywheel. Most folks would balance the pressure plate and flywheel as well, on a budget you may be ok without that. Good luck with your project, and have fun. |

Re: Clutch Help
Buy new, i kept my old pressure plate when installing new clutch disc & throwout bearing.
The next summer the pressure plate broke and had to tear it down again. |

Re: Clutch Help
If you're really in a financial bind, I have a bunch of good used clutch parts in my shop. It would be helpful in you would include your location in your profile. There are a lot of good people on here that would help you out.

Re: Clutch Help
Hi all
Thank you for all your replies. I apologize for my delay in responding. We are located in Alberta Canada. I think we may resort to ordering a new clutch assembly. The reason I was asking if anyone had used a truck clutch in a sedan is that the truck clutch is listed as available in Canada at our part retailers while the sedan 9.5" clutch isn't. So if the 11" clutch will work we can save $$ purchasing a new 11" clutch assembly that is available in Canada. Exchange, custom's fees, and shipping costs almost double list prices for anything that we have to have special order from sites like "Shoebox Central" or Denis Carpenter etc. Appreciate all the advice. We would love to make a parts trip down south where parts are cheap and plentiful thanks again |

Re: Clutch Help
Don't think you would like the 11 inch. That would far out weigh the cost to me.

Re: Clutch Help
There are several reasons why you shouldn’t try to use an 11” clutch in your situation. First is that it almost certainly won’t fit properly inside the original Ford passenger car bell housing. Second is that your 49-53 Ford passenger car flywheel is drilled for the stock 9.5” diameter pressure plate. You could have that flywheel redrilled for the 11” but it’s still not the correct one. Third is that the 11” pressure plate from a truck had the wider spacing on the three fingers for the throw out bearing (requiring the largest truck bearing which is too big for the 49-53 Ford input shaft bearing retainer.

Re: Clutch Help
Trucks use the 1 3/8" 10-spline disc and the cars used the 1" 10-spline disc.

Re: Clutch Help
I know nothing about 8BA series, but isn't there also differences in bell housings/ starter plates between trucks and cars? Has the op got the correct parts in that department?
