Speaking of air filters: The sequel
Still finding junk to try and identify. I have this air filter and another very similar. The literature I can find stamped on it is as pictured reads: 8 9600 and:
B PATENTED AND PAT APPD FOR US AND OTHER COUNTRIES If I understand this correctly the 8 indicates 1938 year and according to the so called Green bible it is the part # for the air filter from 1942 to 1946, shown on pages 398 and 399 in my copy. It's unclear to me what the B and patent literature indicates. In the photo it appears rusty but actually it is grease buildup. I have another very similar with no markings that I can find (yet). Someone at some point poked holes in it, presumably for increased airflow. The difference in the top is one has ribs and the one with the numbers is smooth on top. Perhaps someone can clarify these? In addition I have another larger one hanging on the wall out of reach at the moment until I can get a youngun' up there to retrieve it. From the ground it appears to be an oil bath. As soon as I get it I'll post the threequel in this ongoing saga. Should I clean them? |

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
First one the number is actually 78-9600 which started in 1937. The number was updated in later years, believe 91A was the prefix in 1939. Other air cleaner was earlier, others will chime in with that usage.

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
Interesting. I reexamined the numbers and it does appear there is a faint 7 preceding the 8 however it is inconclusive without further investigation. These air filters have been around for decades and have accumulated a significant amount of dust built up on top of the grease. I am always reluctant to clean anything given the current "patina" line of thinking but in this case it was necessary to read the numbers. I used Windex for starters then gently scrubbed with a sponge pad soaked in Dawn dish soap. I also recognize that some of the numbers were stamped rather lightly from the factory. My hope is to identify these and hopefully somehow put them back into service to someone who appreciates the real deal. I will not destroy a little bit of history if the part is useful and functional.

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
I agree that the bottom picture is probably a 35-36 vintage due to the shape of the top. I remember back in the day when the wingnut for the top was worth more than the air cleaner itself!

Here’s a picture of my 36 air filter which I believe to be correct. |

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
1936Tudor in post #5. Yes, that's the one. I just compared it to the one I have. Remarkably I can still make out where that oval sticker was once attached. And as deuce roadster points out in post #4 the wingnut is in fact missing. The top is secured with 2 square nuts. I'll look around in the massive collection of nuts and bolts and see if I can find one. Dad saved every nut and bolt from anything. If I had the skills and knowledge I would try and repair the holes punched in the top and attempt to restore it but alas, I know nothing about metal repair. The rest of it is really straight. Where would one get a reproduction sticker like that?

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
Does anybody know if the original one said “oftener “ under dusty conditions? Rather than “more often “? Sorry, just some of the odd things I think about before the second cup of coffee..........Mark

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
Tom, I believe the proper wing nut is a stamped steel unit, not a solid one. The 35-6 experts will know for sure.

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
Not trying to hijack this thread, but this is the air cleaner that was on my '39 Standard when I got it. Is this correct?

I found these 2 that fit in the wing nut cubby. Unfortunately the threads are a little munged up on the stud but I can get them to easily thread down until they hit. I think a thread chaser would clean it up ok. I'm sure there are plenty of other stamped steel wing nuts out there if I looked harder. There were also others in the cubby that were too big and too small. Tom |

Re: Speaking of air filters: The sequel
Does anyone know what size the stud and wingnut are for these?
