Default Starter issue

My starter is doing something I have never seen or heard before. It engages just fine but after startup there is a bad noise like the bendix is not disingaging. After a few seconds it goes away but it happens every time I start it. I took the starter out and there is nothing wrong with the bendix. There is witness marks from the ring gear on the pinion like it it has been scraping on it. Engine is a ‘36 and the starter I grabbed from an 8ba. It was a manual trans 8ba that it came from. Any thoughts?

Can be thata wear/engagement pattern has worn on starter when fitted in the 8BA then when fitted to your present engine there may be slight non alignment and hence the noise at disengagement. Just my thoughts.

do you have the oil pan to starter support in place? bent shaft on starter can cause this, rough teeth on flywheel or Bendix, too much grease and junk on Bendix "threads"

Times 2! Somewhere in the foggy past I remember a Ford guy at Molin Ford explaining why any lube at all will gather dust, dirt, grime and other corruption that will cause the Bendix to hang up.

There is no grease on the bendix. The bracket that goes to the oil pan is there. Maybe it has a bent shaft or maybe like Phil said it has worn into a flywheel for a long time then on mine is does not like it. I would like to track down another starter and see what happens.

Pull the starter, remove the armature and ck to see if it's bent. I had a A with a bent armature on the Bendix end. I also recently had a new V8 starter where the armature was out of round, causing problems as it occassionaly rubbed the field coils.

Nothing visually wrong with mine. Nothing bent. Went over to my buddy Kevin’s shop and got the starter off a ‘40 engine he has and it works just fine on mine. No noises. So something must be up with mine.
