1936 bumper black line

So I just got the bumpers rechromed and with all of the polishing, the recess for the two black lines are no longer well defined. Anyone have an original bumper that they can measure the width of the black lines for me?


I did look in the 35-36 book and did not see anything there.

I'll give you a measurement and some info later this morn when I am in my workshop.
I have original bumpers on my 36 Humpback.

I have the same issue and was thinking of using pin stripe tape if I can find the right width. Front bumper is new, rear has black stripe, I came up with 3/16". What kind of material do you plan on using for the black lines?

I purchased new after market bumpers for my 34, I used 1/4 inch pin stripe tape, looks great. Ken

I am going to use 2 part primer and 2 part (not 2 stage) black paint only because I have it left over from other projects. Otherwise I would just use ACE gloss black oil base paint.


I also used green frog tape, but could have used HD blue tape, and cut it on glass 1/4 wide to go in the middle and left 3/16 open for paint. I also used the 1/4 tape for the outside edges just because it was easier to curve. Once I hear back from Peter in NH to make sure the 3/16 for the line is correct, I'll paint the lines with a brush.

Factory drawings for 1935-36 bumper guards call for a stripe of .18 inches. That's very close to 3/16 inches.

I used 3/16" black striping tape on mine, after attempting to paint them on.
Looks good,lasts long, easy to do, cheap.
Whats not to like?

The guys that did the pin stripes on the line where not as precise as we think. They ran down the side of a 38 with three brushes on a stick. Certainly didn't take hours laying a stripe down. Sure practice makes perfect.

On a bumper you can brush it on. Then go back with long strokes of acetone and a rag to clean it up.

I remember trying to mask off a club plate to paint the background. Till a painter said just paint the plate black and then come back after it dries with a rag lite with solvent and clean off the high areas.

Just a thought.

Pete you probably know also, if you are at a show next summer (god willing) there are guys that run around and pinstripe. Or just find him, take his card if he's busy. Not as expensive as it sounds sometimes.

I masked my entire original 35 bumpers off with the exception of what was left of the groove
after having been replated for the second time. I then shot a coat of PPGs epoxy primer
which will adhere excellently to chrome covered items. After that was dry I used some of
my Concept black single stage urethane for my finish coat. My stripe falls into the approximate 3/16" width that has been indicated. There is a product referred to as Fine Line
tape which will conform well to contours and is available in 1/8", 1/4" widths. I redid my
36 original bumpers this way many years ago and they still look great.

I Don't have a book on 36 pickups. I only have the 35-36 Book for passenger cars.

My 35 Bumpers were black striped originals - so when I re-did the Coupe ... I chose Ford Blue (hand pin-stripped) to match the Ford Blue hood emblem and V8 hub caps and subtle hood side script I was lucky as my bumper "line accent indents" were deep and clear!
