Default 1930 Model A brake problem.

I replaced the brake lining on all four wheels over the winter, I used the break lining kit from Snyders p/n A-2021. When I took the car out this spring everything was just fine, good braking, no wheel pull, all the drums were not exceptionally hot after the test drive, all was good. Now that I have driven the car about 150 miles this shrieking noise has started only on the first two or three stops, then the noise disappears for the rest of the trip. I pulled the drums back off last night to inspect everything. I found all the linings looked new,no signs of grease or wear on any of the them, all the drums were shiny no signs of rust or grease on them. I can't understand what is causing this, it seems the same every time I take it out for a drive. Has anyone else experienced anything like this, and what correction do I need to make to eliminate this ?

If it sits idle for a while and not driven often I too have that noise but once you start to drive it goes away, Not an issue that I can see, My modern veh do the same. The brakes components just relaxing!

Which wheels does this noise come from ? All ? Fronts or rears ? Both forward and backwards or only one direction ?

Did you chamfer/taper the ends of the friction material [ shoes] ? That is my first thought. If it wasn't done, try it. The square ends can 'chatter' against the drums when applied and the noise is annoying.

I have the same event, I don't want to call it a problem. If our car is not driven for a while, the breaks will squeak when I stop at the end of our driveway. Than they are fine for the rest of the drive.

One of my cars does this too. I put it down to a film of rust developing in the drum if it is left for a while before driving. It goes away after a stop or two and so does my concern.

If you follow the service bulletins and adjust the brakes properly, lubricate properly, use the shoe centering tool that will fix any noise, pulling and or anything else.
Did my today for a upcoming tour and should not have any problems.
Henry did almost 5 mil of these A's so I follow what he says.

Did you chamfer each end of each brake lining? This helps avoid squeaking.

Mine too. We get damp nights being close to the ocean and I don't drive it every day. I just figured it was a light surface rust on the cast iron drums. The squeak disappears after the first stop. About the same time my alternator "self energizes" and starts charging.

And yes, the ends of my shoes are chamfered.

If it goes away and brakes are good I wouldn't worry. As others have said, are the edges (leading and trailing) chamfered??

Drive it some more. FWIW
