Default Master Cylinder Geyser

I had to make a panic-stop and broke something. The previous owner of the car upgraded the brakes to juice, which I think are 1939 Ford Sedan. There is no fluid leakage but suddenly the pedal travel is almost to the floor. The fluid level is good, but when brakes are applied you can observe a geyser of brake fluid surging out of the cylinder back into the reservoir. Is that check-valve failure?

Sounds like a bypassing master cylinder , when the brakes are applied the compensating port is blocked and pressure is applied to the wheel cylinders, and when the brakes are released the fluid returns through the compensating port to the master cylinder reservoir. sounds like your master cylinder is defective.

when you first push the pedal there will be a squirt out the compensating port

have someone look at the hoses to see if one is swelling when the pedal is pushed
