Default F-1 or F-47

I have a 1952 Canadian built Ford half ton PU. It is identical to the American F-1. I've seen some similar Canadian built trucks referred to as F-47 which is evidently based on their GVWR (F-47 = 4,700 lbs.). Does anyone know if I have an F-1 or an F-47? There is no indication anywhere on the truck to show what it is.

Since your truck is a 1952 I’m sure it’s an F-1. Canadian laws changed during the Bonus Built model years, but I’m unaware of the exact year it changed. Stu

Edit - As I suspected, the change in Canadian law occurred before 1951. The below 1951 Canadian F-3 brochure is the only piece of Canadian literature I have. Bought it because of the odd dual rear wheel option that wasn’t available on US production trucks. While it’s for an F-3 model, the concept applied to the full model lineup. Stu

Yes, by 1952 Canadian built Ford (and Mercury) trucks were using the same designation as their U.S. built conterparts. This ad, like many I have, from 1952 shows it.

Notice the 52 Ford truck in this ad shows "F5" sign on the side of the hood. Wonder if the smaller trucks had it too?

Thanks. Now I know I have an F-1. The newest F-47 on YouTube seems to be 1950.

Looks like Canadian trucks were badged with a M only for 1948 through 1950 and then they went back to the F series. The M47 stands for a GVW of 4700lbs.

No, the M47/68 were the Mercury trucks. The Fords were F47/68/ and bigger. There was no Canadian equal of the light 3/4 F-2 with 5700 lb gvwr. In 1951 the Mercs became M-1/3 etc while the Fords became same as in the US minus the F-2. Stu

Ford of Canada was not owned by Ford USA so they did a lot of things differently. Their use of gross vehicle weight rating abbreviations was a good way of making them distinctive from US models. The separation between the Ford And Lincoln/Mercury dealers was based on the current Canadian laws at the time. Here in the states there were separate dealers and conjoined dealers for the Ford/Mercury/Lincoln products. Mercury pickups & trucks plus Monarch and Meteor cars were a Canadian thing that was passed on the other British Commonwealth countries in the 50s.

Here in the US, the meteor name was used by Mercury division for only a few short years in the 60s.
