I believe to lube it properly you need to pull that small brass cup in your second photo. That allows lube to get to the actual shaft and bushing. I'm doing the same on a '32 speedo, but have not figured out how to pull that cup yet.

What year is the speedo? Typically the oil hole cup is on the outside of the speedo. Good to have a short piece of cable and outer housing you can put a motor drill on the cable and operate it in reverse direction, from a twist drill, to work the oil in to the shaft and check operation before reassembly it sometimes takes a couple of days for the oil to reach the shaft.

Dont do like I did. Speedo did not work, Bought a new cable and lube. Crawled under the dash and found out all i needed to do was tighten the end. It is always nice to have nice new extra parts that you will not need. But I found out that if you have extra parts.you will hardly ever need them

Use the lube specially made for the job, not oil. It comes in a tube. C&G has it (800/266-0470) as B5A-19581-A, $5.95 if you can't find it locally.

I used a small spiral style EZ out to get the little cup plug out; just a little twist and it came right out.

I’ve read the oil recommendation for lubing the speedometer head is sewing machine oil.
