Default Town Sedan Roof Leak

Hi Boffins:

I have an excruciating situation: My '31 Town Sedan's roof leaks. It makes two wet patches at the back section on either side of the headcloth.

My upholsterer has removed the whole interior headcloth but even so, my panel beater can't see where the water is coming from when he hosepipes the roof.

Where do I go from here?

Your help will be hugely appreciated.

Sorry but it sounds like you are pulling the material off and redoing it. It may even be coming in from another point of the roof.

Water can travel down a bow or even the chicken wire if the leak is in the top cover. If its around the edges only then that area may be repairable but it depends on the condition of the tack strips and all that. It takes some knowledge about installing a new top to be able to properly seal around the edges before any finish strips or hidem welting it installed. If you can get the finish strips or hidem off without damage then you may be able to reseal it. If the top material is damaged then it will need a whole new top job.

No matter how good the sealant is, it seems to have a working life that is limited. It can last a very long time but it seldom lasts for more than the average automobile life span. Now if it is kept in a climate controlled environment then it will last longer. If you never get caught in the rain then it won't ever leak but that isn't always possible or practical.

Mine was doing the same, comtng from where the roof material meets the metal, used some black sealer, in the shade, with my finger and a rag, nice and slow, all the way around, no more leak. Sorry for spalling errors, if any, don't have my glasses on.
