Default 41 coupe transmission and gear oil

Hello everyone
I know this subject has been covered but I would like some advice. I'm getting ready to change the oil out in gear box and rear. I narrowed the oil choice to Sta Lube Gl4. Not sure whether I should use 80W90 or 140. After driving the car a bit I did notice it has a hard time shifting into 1st once warmed up. Due to that I'm thinking 140 might be a better choice. Do you agree? I'm still trying to figure out the car and what works and what doesn't.

The viscosity somewhat depends on personal preference and outside temperature. Do you plan on driving it year round?

The original OEM specs were SAE 80 for cooler weather and SAE 90 for warmer weather. The multi-vis stuff is made to fit that requirement for year round service. SAE 140 would be OK in the rear axle but could make shifting of the transmission harder if used in it. It would really show up in winter weather.

I assume you know that those transmissions were not synchronized into 1st or Reverse gears. The vehicle must come to a stop before you can shift into those.

The synchro for Second and High gears may be getting worn and not doing its job well, particularly after the gear oil warms up. Try the 140 gear oil to see if that helps a bit. Also, make double sure that your clutch is properly adjusted. A dragging clutch will cause those symptoms also.

I use Stalube 140 in my banjo but changed to their lower 85w-90 in the tranny because it allows the syncro's to align and shift faster.

If your used to a automatic transmission fluid makes a huge difference of course.

Thick weight just slows the spinning gears a very little. May help with spur cut setups, but not by much.

Respectfully whatever MacVP says, is what you need to listen to.

I plan on driving it all year round. I'm in NC so at least as much as I can in the winter time. I'll adjust the clutch and start with 80W90 and go up to 140 if needed. Appreciate the help.
