Default Possibly stupid question

Does the drive shaft pull out of the differential by taking the torque tube off? The illustrations I see make it look like it should but I'm not sure.
In other words do I need to take an axle and housing off to remove the drive shaft?

Yes the torque tube needs to come off and then you need a special puller to get the drive shaft and pinion gear out of the pumpkin.

NOT a STUPID question has been answered. My question is why are you wanting to remove the drive shaft? One question leads to another question, we all learn from questions from many answers:-)

Adding to above; after you remove the driveshaft tube, if the driveshaft/ pinion bearing/race assembly almost fall out of the housing or pull out with little resistance, you have issues that need to be address before you worry about cutting down the driveshaft.

Yes, you have to remove an axle housing, the pinion is held to the driveshaft with a nut inside, the pinion is on a taper with a keyway just like a hub drum assy

It has been discussed on here quite a bit. I'm building a speedster using as many John Deere parts as possible. Right now it has a three speed model A tranny and rear end, and it is too fast in first gear. I don't really care about top speed but I want it to be able to go about 5 mph at shows and such.
I am either going to install an AA four speed or some other small tranny in the driveline. In any case I need to shorten the drive shaft. I'm not using the A bell housing so I can't replace it with the shallower AA one.

One of my school teachers, a very decent fellow by the name of Ray Gurran said "don't be afraid to ask for there will be others that don't know as well".

I guess not only did they not know but lacked the courage to ask.

Thanks. That is very helpful. Kurt probably wouldn't agree with it though.

It is common practice to shorten the drive shaft to make room to install an over drive .

Brattons catalog has been my quick referance for technical info that can be hard to find elsewhere !!!!!!!

I would think that the people that sell the overdrive would offer this service. It would depend on the brand of overdrive that would be used . I have seen drive shafts and torque tubes shortened to alter the wheel base on some speedsters . Resplineing the end of the driveshaft is usually required .
