Options to paint the bumper's groove?
Just had my 33 Tudor bumpers rechromed. Unfortunately did not know the groove should be painted with black enamel and everything is now covered with shiny chrome. Any suggestions how to paint the grooves? My body shop says forget about it because no paint will stick to chrome. Wet sanding the grooves may risk scratching and damaging the rest of the chrome. If nothing will work at least I'd like to learn to do it right next time ! Manuel

Manuel, Hola .Ford cromed then painted. You mask out the groove then rub it with the Nilon pad (Dish/ pad , Barilio ) not sure what you call it .Degrease .Then spray with single stage solid colour .or sign writers enamel .Or you could etch prime with the clear etch before the top coat .

Use a paint pen. Its like a magic marker only contains paint.Very easy to follow the groove with it.Hobby shops carry it.Did my 36 bumpers yrs ago still looks good. ken ct usa

The purists don't like this but I have always used pinstripe tape. In my opinion, the only differences between pinstripe tape and actual paint is it looks better and seems to last longer.

I also used tape on the rear of my '36, but used red reflective tape rather than a solid color. I know that the rear lenses have a reflector effect, but at night I now have 2 red lines that go the full width of the car.

Peter, that is one great idea. I may have to steal it!
Also, I hate to tell you this, but your rumble seat step pads are on the wrong side of the car. |

Re: Options to paint the bumper's groove?
All right. Three good simple ideas that will fix my problem. Will give a try with the paint pen first or just use the pinstripe tape. Cool. Muchas gracias Barners. Manuel

I've used the tape also and it works fine.

Use One Shot paint enamel. My son does pinstriping and has done this numberous times. Looks great and lasts for years. Tape will fade, edges will lift.

Re: Options to paint the bumper's groove?
If you'll note, the steering wheel is also on the "wrong" side of the car......for us Americans, that is. It's an Australian, right-hand-drive car. If you'll remember, Henry DID NOT put the outside, key-operated locks in the doors on the drivers' side back in those days, to promote safety by entering the vehicle on the passenger side, away from passing traffic. Same idea with entering the rumble seat area from the NON-street side. DD

I painted my 39 over the chrome with no prep work except washing. Nine years later, still there.

Thanks, barnfind. Looks like another attempt at humor on this forum has gone awry.
