39 transmission, shifter pin
Been warned several times to be careful when removing shifter handle from my 39 Transmission. I was careful, but saw no pin or place for a pin would be. So I guess it is down below somewhere in the case. Can someone explain exactly where this pin should be. This transmission was bought a long time ago, and its background and history is unknown. Thanks

Re: 39 transmission, shifter pin
gonna take a stab at this. i think you mean the fulcrum pin. look at the right side threads on the shifter tower, there should be a small hole thru it, thats where the fulcrum pin is.

Re: 39 transmission, shifter pin
The pin must be there. If you have no pin then the lever would spin around. The pin holds the lever in position. good luck

Re: 39 transmission, shifter pin
Hey Lou,
ole39 has it right! It the pin is not there, but fell to the bottom of the case and you don't want to disassemble your trans, you have a couple options, IMO. First a small magnet on a 'stick' (harbor freight or such as source) to poke around to see if in bottom of case. What I did was just install new pin. Trouble is encountered in these old trans when both the pin and slot where it fits are BOTH worn. As the pin is relatively soft metal, I used the next size larger DRILL BIT , which is hardened, and cut to size...works perfect in my use. |

Re: 39 transmission, shifter pin
Apologize for my ignorance. There is a short dowel pin in the shift tower, that seems to be pressed in as it is not loose. I would think this would keep the shift handle from spinning.
Not being familar with this transmission, when I heard or read about the pin falling down in the case, I thought(that's where I got in trouble) there was a longer and thinner pin on the bottom portion of the shift handle shaft. I stand corrected and thanks for all the responses. |
