Best Chevy Forum?
I finally sold the 51 Custom for the widow and took possession of a 46 Chevy Pickup yesterday to sell for her. I know nothing about it and need to join a good Chevy forum for this year of vehicle to learn all about it. Which one is the best?

I have always liked that color of green.

Re: Best Chevy Forum?
I know nothing of trucks nor Chevys but, as far as I can tell, the only modification on this truck is a glass pack muffler and the tires and wheels. She's actually got the full set of original tires and wheels for anyone that wanted it bone stock. It's 99% complete, just lacking window and door seal, dash gauges including speedometer, wipers, and some knobs. From my research I've decided we can move the truck quickly on Hemmings for $19,900.00. Here are more pictures. I posted them all on the ChevyTalk forum with a list of questions and have had zero response. If anyone knows anything about this truck and would be willing to tell me about it on this forum that would be more information than I've gotten anywhere else. These are the questions I asked:
Is there a model name for this truck? What is its weight capacity? What size of engine is it? How much horse power? What are the two holes on each side behind the door? And the two holes on the left hood as pictured? Where do the two pieces on the seat go, if anywhere? How much has anyone bought or sold or knows anyone who has bought or sold a truck like this for?

Re: Best Chevy Forum?
I finally got a response on ChevyTalk. It's a 3/4 ton 3600 series with 216 cu.in. 6 cylinder 90 hp engine.

Re: Best Chevy Forum?
Looks like my high school car. Looks like it might have its original 216 (3.5 x 3.75). A quick google confirmed my vague memory... so-called 90 hp. About like the way Ford advertised - optimistic. Google suggests it might have been a 3100, if it was a half ton. I don't remember the 3100 designation in 46, although it could have been. Does it have a 6-ft bed? If yes, that could indicate half ton (there are exceptions). 6-lug wheels would also indicate half ton. 8-lug wheels = 3/4 ton.
I dont know anything about the holes - not factory. |

Re: Best Chevy Forum?
Very nice. For whatever reason the six lug half tons always bring more money than the 8 lug 3/4 and one tons. And what's that tin cover on the engine that looks like an upside down 3' long bread pan?

Craig... it could have a SM 420 in it. Is it a 4 speed granny, or a three speed? Anybody notice the heater box? It looks like 46-48 Ford passenger, maybe? Last edited by bobH; 08-30-2015 at 12:55 PM. |

Re: Best Chevy Forum?
Top loader tranny, 4 speed, has the reverse lock out switch as well.
FWIW, I think it'd look better with the factory wheels on it, painted shiny ofcourse, and have better "eye appeal". Those wheels are just so wrong for a truck, especially a 3/4 ton. |

Re: Best Chevy Forum?
Mike, I'm puzzled... those 4 speed trans' are used in numerous off-road, rock crawler Jeeps. We even have one in my family. By the time the 420 finds its way into a Jeep, there is NO 'lockout'. Was there one, originally? What did it look like? I can't envision a 'switch'.

Your quote from the first post......."From my research I've decided we can move the truck quickly on Hemmings for $19,900.00."
Although seemingly nice looking with shiny paint and zippy wheels, you've got to remember that that's an oddball year (desirability-wise) for a Chevy, and a basically stock one, no less. I wouldn't get your friend's widow's hopes built-up too high on gettin' anything like $20K for that one real soon. |

Re: Best Chevy Forum?
I'm not a Chevy expert, but those holes on the cab behind the doors could have been for "grab handles" or "assist handles".
