I store my cranks in a magnetic levitation chamber with modulated
cross current so the cranks are always in sinusoidal motion.

Makes you wonder what effect the sinusoidal waves might have on molecules during operation of the crankshaft.

Yup. I bought an NOS 1936 crankshaft at Hershey, still sealed it its box, back in the sixties.
Hauled that thing home and pried open the box...Holy Cow!! It was just a shapeless 50 pound iron blob, stuck to the bottom of the box!!
Well, I thought it through. Turned it upside down, stuck it on a shelf way in the back of the garage. Every time I think of it, I go back there and peer into the end of the box with a flashlight. Well, I can see it coming down like stalactites and starting to form up again! The counterweights are about there, the journals are still a little funky.
I just hope I live long enough to see a crank in there, and I sure hope I don't wait too long and see a blob on the other side of the box!

They do sag, i have some that already have. And storing batteries on concrete can still damage the plastic case ones if the concrete is rough. Drag one across some concrete as you pick it up and see how thin the bottom gets.

so if a crank bends laying on a floor, why would it not sag sitting on end? it looks like it would like like a pretzel sitting on end

It is the theory of coincidental logic, the 6th law of statistics. This law is commonly used in politics and legal battles before the lawyer shows up.

I just had a great idea! I'm going to buy a 4 1/4" Scat crank and make a bunch of molds. Then I'm gonna get a bunch of cast iron billets and set them on top of the molds. I figure my great-grandchildren will have a bunch of stroker cranks they can sell at phenominal prices. Probably better than the stock market these days!

I did that once and the power went out and broke one of them. I've stored them standing up since.

So a crank stored on end on the floor will slowly topple over like the Leaning Tower of Pisa due to lack of vertical support at the lower rod throw or two? If hung in a rack will it eventually stretch out like a limp noodle?

It's worse in Australia due to the increased gravity.

Well, especially since you guys are upside down to begin with. Very hard on crankshafts. I suspect driving on the wrong side of the road doesn't help either. Something to do with the spinning of the Earth on its axis.

I decided to do my own test. I hung a 36 LB crank from the floor joist in the basement and stood another one on a plywood piece on the basement floor . Just as I was to close the lights , the one standing toppled over and banged my big toe! I jumped in pain then hit my head on the hung one on the joists! My doctor recommended to put the cranks in the spare blocks .
