Autolite Spark Plugs
Does anyone have a comment on using Autolite Plugs in a '40 85 hp ? I've used them in other cars in the past with good luck. Just wondering !
What is the proper plug ID number ? Thx.....Mike |

Re: Autolite Spark Plugs
I use Autolite 216's in all our Flatheads, except the ones with aluminum heads, for the aluminum heads I use Autolite (CRS strikes again) I can't remember the # but I'm sure someone will post it. I have always had good luck with Autolite plugs.

Re: Autolite Spark Plugs
The Autolite 437 is the best plugs for that motor. That is what I think anyway! Slighty hotter than the Autolite 216, either of these are better than Champion H10. That is what I think anyway!

Re: Autolite Spark Plugs
To make a head puller, I need to remove the innards from spark plugs so that I can tap them for all thread.
Removing the innards from Champion plugs is relatively easy while the Autolite 216 plugs are darn near impossible. They are just too well made. Whether that makes a difference to plug performance in normal use I don't know but I suspect that the Autolite plugs will last longer. Tom |

Re: Autolite Spark Plugs
I put my newly all rebuilt 59-A in my '40 pickup with everything new. I put in Champion h-10, darn thing didn't act good at all. I finally took them out and put in a set of Autolite as someone recommended, the motor just purred and runs beautifully. Good product, good luck with yours. Jack

Re: Autolite Spark Plugs
I've been using Autolite and NGK plugs for several reasons, but the most important is: the Champions H-10 had a cur thread and were hard on aluminum heads. The other plugs had rolled threads and were a little kinder than the champs.
I don't know where or how their made now. As a side note I bought a set of Mexican points for my SBC dist and the regular price for them is over 62 bucks and the little Allen wrench too de oesn't fit. lucky it has a screw driver slot. |

Re: Autolite Spark Plugs
Nothing, they work great. It's the Champ H-10's you have to watch out for. read the post.

Re: Autolite Spark Plugs
A word of caution here, the plug reach of the stock heads and the old aftermarket heads was 7/16. The new Edelbrock and Offy heads take a 3/4 reach plug and here's the rub, some of these plug selections leave several threads exposed to the combustion and can cause pre-ignition. These few extra threads can be removed with a 45 deg countersink.
