Oil change added 5 quarts
Hey guys, I just changed the oil in my 30 Vicky, I put 5 quarts in. Now after reading the Fourm, I've found out that I should have put only 4 1/2 quarts in! Do I need to drain off a 1/2 quart? Or is it ok to go with 5?

Re: Oil change added 5 quarts
The dipper tray will hold up to one quart of oil so you only need to add four quarts if the tray is full. I like to keep the oil level just a little below the Full mark on the dip stick. Use the dip stick as your oil level indicator.

Drive it, that is not severely overfilled. Next time consult the dipstick as you go.

Re: Oil change added 5 quarts
I run considerably below the mark on the dip stick. Perhaps a third of the way down. This due to concerns about rear main leak which the A as originally conceived is prone to.
The oil that sits in the pan is just the "storage volume." The oil that sits in the tray above is what does the actual work as it is thrown around by the connecting rods. Instructions for the Model A USED to be change every 500 miles. With today's oils, particularly if you use a detergent oil/filter, such a short oil change interval is no longer necessary. I figure because of the improvement in oils, one can also go lower in the reservoir and use total less oil overall - i.e. you're making what oil you have "work harder." But to no less effect. Joe K

I agree with Joe . With the better oil that we now use , oil changes can be extended . When the oil is over filled it will leak out the rear main bearing until it finds its level . I don't guess it would do any damage other than make an oily mess . I would probably get a clean container ant drain out the over fill . If or when you drain too much you can pour it back in .

Re: Oil change added 5 quarts
I saw an elderly gentleman change his oil, and forgot to drain it first. We saw he was leaking oil like crazy climbing into the Colorado mountains. We stopped about 40 miles into the trip and emptied 4 qts out. Didn't seem to matter other than making a mess.

Re: Oil change added 5 quarts
I find it a more economical if I buy the 5 quart jug of oil at Wal Mart and first pour a quart into a quart container. Then put the rest into the engine. That bring it back to the full mark on the dip stick. Do this four times and you have enough saved 1 quart oil bottles on the shelf for another oil change. Chap

Re: Oil change added 5 quarts
Speaking of oil at Walmart, is straight SAE 30 no longer available? I could only find it in a 5 quart HD diesel application, which I bought figuring it would do no harm (well, only to my wallet). No quarts, gallons or 5 quart containers of regular SAE 30 motor oil were there.

Please no more posts about straight weight...non detergent oil...if its detergent then O.K.
Dont overfill the pan. Only asking for leaks. Brian W. |

Re: Oil change added 5 quarts
Good afternoon all...I agree that we can go bit longer between oil changes with modern detergent oils...However, we still need to lube the 31 or so lube fittings as wear happens when the grease is old or dirty or no there in enough quantity...Ernie in Arizona
