Default 1940 that had sat awhile.....

I bought 3 years ago a '40 V-8. The first two years it burned a lot of oil. Seemed like I was adding a quart every couple weeks. It also showed a discharge around the plugs.

Now into the 3rd year.....I only added 1 quart in 1,500 miles, plus there is little to none of the leakage around some of the plugs.

This car sat for many years and did not get driven very much at all.

What do you think happened ?

Thx...Mike

What has probably happened is that the rings have seated/sealed better after some usage. Who knows what condition it was in and potentially it had been rebuilt and the rings had yet to seal. Or, maybe the engine sat . . . had some rust in the bores and now with a bit of wear, it seals better - less oil is getting up into the combustion chambers, etc.

What I would say is "take it when you can get it" . . . as most guys are not this lucky with Father Time!

the rings were stuck and gradually the crud holding them moved out thru the oil changes. I had a 51 truck engine with 34,000 miles, been sitting for a long time in the woods, soaked the pistons with atf/acetone for a couple of days and it started up after cleaning the plugs/points. had 120 lbs compression and held 20 oz of vacuum

For whatever reason, I am not a fan of the 38's, but I really like the 39 Standards. Go figure.

I don't even like the '39 Standards, but the particular combination of Tudor and fender skirts on this one just works! DD

Beautiful car!! Consider yourself lucky, we bought a 1942 Tudor a number of years ago at Hershey that smoked like a steam train. Only it didn't get better with time, it got worse. Finally bit the bullet and had the engine gone through - new rings, valve guides and found a missing tooth in one of the transmission gears, plus just generally tired. Several thousand later I have a beautiful running, and looking car.

Thanks! Just picked her up this past June! Wanted a flathead since I was a kid. Grew up helping my Dad tinker with his 49 tudor and 41 1/2 ton.

I was never a big fan of skirts myself until I saw them on this car. Love how it flows!
