Default Trip meter question - oval speedometer

I just got my uncle's 1928 coupe up and running, and noticed an anomaly with the trip meter in the oval speedometer. The sequencing of numbers is off, and the number to the left turns over on the nine instead of the zero. Was it rebuilt this way at some point? Is there a simple way to fix this? I thought maybe I could just redo the decals if the glass comes off.

Here's an example of the sequence:

10.8
11.9
11.0

Here's another one:

18.8
29.9
29.0
29.1
29.2
29.3
29.4
29.5
29.6
29.7
29.8
20.9
20.0

When my spedometer was rebuilt I was told that the trip meter was very fragil and the best thing was to leave it alone.

If you set it while moving you may strip the gears. Always set it standing still.

My guess is it is damaged.

Mine jumps a bit too! Have had it apart and the problem on mine is the trip device is hitting a bad notch on the "ones" "tens" gears. It happens! It is 88 years old and lot of people have messed with it. If I find a junk speedometer, cheep, I will try and fix this. So far it is just an annoyance if I look at it.

I got mine from papanick a member on the forum. It is an oval kilometer speedometer and it works very smooth. I think he charges $150 to rebuild.

I also got one (recently) from papanick too. Made me realize how sluggest my old one was -- it was worth the expense
