Loss of power... stumbling ford...
OK Brains... time to work....
A week ago (maybe unrelated) my truck was losing power - missing - I regapped the points (yes, needed it) and retimed. Running fine. Wednesday (hot day 95) got to a destination and as I pull up, SERIOUS loss of power. 29 sat for an hour, started up, got 5-6 blocks away and serious loss of power. Got it home, replaced condenser after engine cooled, took for a test drive (short) no problem - plenty of power! On the way to Lowes today, about a mile or so from home, loss of power (not quite as bad, but temp only 84, lost of humidity, too). On the way home I try accelerating, pull choke out all the way and when engine recovers, seems to be ok. Made it home, got out Les Andrews, took it for another short test drive and loss of power. (Tho I can accelerate when NOT under load and there is NO hesitation.) Swapped in rebuilt carb, took for test drive and once up to operating temp again, loss of power BUT not quite as bad. Pulling choke temporarily causes smooth, powerful running for a short time. Seems to be plenty of gas from gas line to . Engine has less than 2000 miles since being rebuilt. Suggestions? Miracle cures? Thanks!!!! Dave :-) |

Re: Loss of power... stumbling ford...
Vacuum leak somewhere? Causing it to run super rich with the choke would counteract a leak somewhere in the intake I would think.

Re: Loss of power... stumbling ford...
You say gas flow good to engine. Have you checked when the car is acting up. May be getting crud stunk in the shut off valve. When it starts to act up, pull over, take the fuel line loose and let the gas flow into a coffee can ect, and check the flow for several seconds. Although the choke seems to help points to fuel you might try another coil, it may be getting hot and breaking down.

Like I said on Facebook, I am suspecting faulty coil.

I would think coil also. Not the expert on this sort of thing but if you have another coil handy, may try putting it on.

Re: Loss of power... stumbling ford...
I usually see coils fail when hot but work OK cold, but I'm also thinking this could be an ethanol issue, if you are using the 10% crap gas.

Defiantly sounds electrical if all of a sudden it started happening. Mine did this similar thing and it was the modern distributor plated that screwed things up. So I had my mechanic change out the plate to the original style and everything was fine again.

Re: Loss of power... stumbling ford...
This sure sounds like the same problem a few of us had in Lexington during the MARC meet with bad gas. If you have a glass sediment bowl, what does it look like? We all ended up with water mixed in the gas that had started to separate after filling the cars and parking them for a day.

Vapor Lock,
Try adding Marvel Mystery Oil to your gas (use recommended amount on MMO). Marc |
