the unexspect benefit of owning an old car
Last year we went down the valley for a week away in the 33 and caravan, as usual we passed an old farm with two large silos on it, we have been going down the valley since around 82 in our old cars and had often talked about these silos as we passed, so that time we stopped in and asked if we could take some photos of them.
The farmers wife was very nice and told us the history of the farm and silos ,one of which had a small room fashioned at the bottom where an English orphan once lived, he lived in the bottom of the silo until enlisting in The Australian army in WW2. So ,this morning after fitting a new clutch plate in the 34 , I went down the valley to visit my mates old sawmill,(the one that gave up the v8 and model A engines in my shed and the 33) for a test run . At the saw mill , my mates wife (Janice) said she had a parcel from the lady at the silo farm for me. This I opened when I got home after the 170 mile trip. It contained a hand written history of the farm ,and silos ,as well as the letters written back to the farm from the English orphan ,Nowa solider from over seas, plus a pile of photos of the farm and silos from the early 30,s.. Very nice. and the new clutch plate is nice and smooth. Lawrie |

That's neat. You just never know what you will come across when in an old car.

Lawrie,
Tell us more about fitting a new clutch plate in the '34. How long did it take? Did you have to do it on the side of the road? Did you anticipate the clutch was going to go? BTW - When did you get a '34? I thought your car was a '33....

Re: the unexspect benefit of owning an old car
Petehovie,
I have had the 34 for about 20 or more years, Re the clutch,I had buggered up the clutch plate a while back when I changed out the tired engine and replaced it with my best original 33 babbit engine,I was too lazy to remove the floor when doing it and forced the engine onto the trans with out it being lined up, this I found the other day when I changed it bent the plate and made the clutch as rough as.I spun the plate on a mandrel and it had a big wobble, I changed it in my shed ,about 1-1/2 days work. The 34 doesn't,t get much use and in the last 6 mths I see it had only done 9 miles, I still have the 33 . 34 pic is from yesterday ,I had stopped to look at an old XP falcon ute in the creak bed there. Re: the unexspect benefit of owning an old car
The old silos are a reminder of the past as most in our area are not used any more. Farms if they are still in business are mainly crop not dairy. My dads farms supported 6 or so cows and the silos were so important to make the milk in the middle of the winter.
Thanks for the story! Great looking cars you have. Love the syling of the 33 and 34's. Regards, Chris
