Default How do you handle disrespect for you & your car?

How do you handle disrespect for you and your car? I live in a small town on a major interstate highway with two exits. I drive one of my ’40 Fords almost daily. I enjoy talking to people that know about the cars or love them for some reason. Today while putting gas into my ’40 station wagon a man came up to the car and started looking at it. First thing he said to me, "how much". I told him the car does not have any for sale signs on it. “Yes but everything is for sale for the right price”. Then he says, “I don’t have to ask my wife and I can have the cash to you in about two hours. I tell you what I’m going to do. I will give you $10,000 for this car”. I didn’t respond. Then he says, “I’m not going to let you leave until you price me this car”. I got in the car and left with him talking to me the entire time. Situations like this are happening so often it is starting to affect where and how I use my cars. People like this don’t have any interest in the car. Their only interest is the money they want to make by taking advantage of the owner.

Tell them you want $100,000.... no less. Cash. Be very serious when you say it, works for me.

I've tried something like this and once you start talking to them about a price they think now it is just a matter of agreeing on a price. They want to go on and on and on.

Take it at least as a compliment. You have something they want. Can't say that ever happens when I'm gassing up my Toyota Tercel!!

I would tell someone like that to talk to my son at my funeral.

About 5 years ago a del 40 wagon sold at auction for $308,000. No way would I sell my 40 wagon for 100k, like you my 40 wagon isn't for sale period. That idiot probably had no idea what the car's value is, just wanted to brag about having some money to spend.
Ha, I just noticed he offered you 10k not 100k. Too funny, definitely clueless.

I've only one vehicle I won't sell-OT-but Dad bought it new-but if the kids were hungry and I needed to make the mortgage...it'd be gone, okay...lol...but back to your situation, the old standby "you can't afford it" works pretty well...hey, I've heard of uys taking taxi rides home after that

But, I don't think I'd look at it as disrespect...but more as an admiration of your car.

Well , I know it is tough to deal with ignorant or abrasive people but don't let them win and ruin your love for driving your Old Ford . I will usually tell them I had to pay $2500. for it and for that kind of money it's to much fun to sell .Then I will start razzing them about not wanting this old clunker, it has no power windows, no MP3 plug in , barely goes 60mph . Then I head out of the conversation with a smile and I go enjoy my car . Don't let them win Enjoy driving and forget the goofballs !!!!

Hey guys, take it as a compliment when someone wants to buy your car. Just smile and say thanks, it isn't for sale.

When some one says something like that to me I usually say ,You'll want some change back, & I don't have any change to give you.
If I'm in a bad mood(most times, hey I'm old)I just tell them to start stacking it up right there ,make a spot, & I'll tell ya when to quit.

I had a guy follow me about 20 miles when I had my 41 truck out, offered me $10,000 for it. I walked around the truck a couple of times and said to him where is the for sale sign? and do you think I just lost my mind left him standing there mumbling. I quoted a guy $ 1,000,000.00 on my 40 wagon when he persisted. Most of These guys drive around it a turd not worth taking home.

I had someone bugging me about my car a couple of years ago. I told him I would sell anything for the right price. Then I told him the price I would take for it and not a penny less. He left and never came back. If you tell them a serious but extreme price it makes them realize your car is out of their league.

Last month, while out and about... And if the cars not rolling which it usually is, i was asked if my 36 was for sale a couple times. I said, of course. Then a blank stare. No money was interchanged but one guy left me his card! I just assumed its car season here now and turkeyrun was coming up. But, If you want to pay me a crazy amount for it, you may own it.

Same cant be said for my trucks.

i do not handle it, that is why i might sell it. i get the opposite reaction, someone told me "Hey you have to get this thing towed out of here"
"Why not drive it out of here?" *starts it*
They look shocked that it runs & offer me $500 for the engine. How about no.

When you drive an attention-getting car, you're going to draw attention. Duh.
No reason to get hostile over it.
