Default Head differences

In a recent thread someone asked about any differences between the 28-29 and the 30-31 engines. I noted the oil return pipe(longer and higher on the early engines) and where it attaches on the valve cover and differences in the water jackets. to see the difference in the water jackets you need to lay the early head next to a later head. The early is on the top in the pics, note how the jackets are narrower and longer on the later or bottom head, presumably to allow more surface area. I don't know when the changeover was made. the center hole is also slightly different. The top head has Ford USA script which I think is very early. The bottom has an "A" on the riser.

I've been told that the script heads were replacements made by Ford after 1931. Maybe someone here can confirm or refute that. Maybe Ford USA was early A and plain Ford was the later production?

Heads marked with "Ford script" and "Made in USA" are later replacement heads made after 1931.
