Rear hub/drum seperation
I need to replace a pitted hub in the rear. How do I separate the drum/hub assembly? I would like to reuse the drum and install a new hub. Any advice?

Re: Rear hub/drum seperation
It's a 1946 two door coupe. Hubs mount on the inside of the drum.

Re: Rear hub/drum seperation
Post your general location (and put it in your profile) and ask for recommendations for a shop with the tools and knowledge about how to do it. It is not something you do at home. A big hammer just results in scrap parts.

Re: Rear hub/drum seperation
old46ford...Click on the link below. It'll show the way your drums have been attached to your hubs at the factory, and WHY you cannot simply press or hammer the lug bolts out. In the lower portion, a tool is shown that can be used to cut the swedge on the lug bolts. Available at Snyder's Model A among others. DD

Re: Rear hub/drum seperation
To re use the drums, drill the old studs from the back. I start with a 5/16" or 3/8" bit to start, easier to pilot. I use 9/16" bit til I'm sure that I'm past the flange that is the back of the stud. Use a punch to push the studs out the front/ outside...
This is because the studs are swaged (riveted) on the outside. If you were scrapping the drums, you could use a swage cutter to cut the end of the stud-and the drum so you you could press the studs in (toward center). Either way, new studs are in order. And machining the drum with the new hub. Karl |

Re: Rear hub/drum seperation
Find a good used drum and hub assembly. Be sure the drum is under 12.060.
