Old A owner with a T question...

Hello!
I've been into A's forever and am now itching for a T. I had a question for the professional's though: Does the A traditional style transmission and rear driveline easily adapt to the Model T frame? Do they make an adapter belhousing to allow directly bolting an A transmission to the T engine?

I like the standard Model T "band drive" just fine...I was just curious from a technical standpoint... Regardless...I'd like to get a Model TT truck at some point.

I have seen Overland and Studebaker transmissions used on T's. Bolted in behind the T tranny like a Warford

Most folks just use a Ruxtell rear axle or an auxiliary transmission (or both). The mods necessary to get a conventional clutch & a working bell housing alone behind a 20 HP T engine would be a lot of tinkering.

The Model T transmission pan is part of the engine pan.
The flywheel is an integral part of the oiling system. Best not to muss with Henry's masterpiece there.
Ruckstell or an auxiliary transmission is the way to go, but brakes need to be added to the wheels for sure.

I'm running a KC Warford in my 27 Tudor. Best option for a T. It has a under, direct and over drive. You effectively have a four speed although you can split them. I run a Ruckstell in my 26 Roadster and 25 TT and like them very well. If you're going to add something I'd go with a KC Warford.

The Model T engine pan is the engine mounting system. The transmission is integral to the engine, as is the magneto. Remove those parts and you have a multitude of problems, and you have effectively removed all the things that make a Model T wonderful and interesting and reliable. For a TT truck there are all sorts of period aftermarket transmissions and the commonly available TT Ruckstell axle. Stick with one of those for best results and most enjoyment. The modern Layne Warfords are nice but very expensive.

Has been done before. Model A engine, but no A trans, instead an adapter was machined to put the A block to the T planetary transmission.


Major issues to fix, removing A water pump at front, as it would hit the T radiator in the T body. Providing sufficient oil to the T transmission, as the A has oil pump, but T transmission needs same oil as engine, but to feed oil to the planetary gears and linings on the bands, and get it back to the A sump. Fellow T guy did this....and this T really runs fine, two speed like a T, but with the 40 horses of the A, and the A exhaust sound!
