Default 39 grease

Hi Gents

I noticed a grease fitting, up by the tranny in the center of the car. Not an easy one to see or get to.

What grease should I use there, is corn grease good?

Is this right behind the transmission? grease fitting on top hard to get to.
regular chassis grease goes there. I see a lot of posts about corn grease
what ever. I am no kid but this has to be a mid west thing. Never heard of
corn grease around here. Even asked Napa they said "say what" them too...

It's not Corn Grease, it is Corn Head Grease. It is used in agriculture, such as a Corn Head which is used to harvest corn. It is for low speed gears like found in a steering box and is used because of it applicability to that type of application and it is much less likely to leak.

The original "Cylinder Oil Soap Soap Grease" Ford specified is no longer made so folks have found Corn head grease to be a good substitute. The fitting you mentioned is on the bottom of the clam shell. If you ever have to take the clam shell apart you can also install a grease fitting on the top of the clam shell so you don't have to crawl under your car. See photos.
Fifth photo was taken before new clam shell seal installed. This is not an AACA resto.

19Fordy - 2nd to last photo ---- yup thats the bugger.

Your idea (moving to top) is American ingenuity at its best!

Glad to see Corn-head grease is fine for that application.

30-9: Thanks. I drilled and tapped the clamshell for the top grease fitting so there is still the OEM fitting on the bottom. I think you can just rotate the clam shell so that the OEM fitting is on the top.

Do you have any John Deere construction equipment or yard equipment dealers in the area? They can order it. Or get a tube of CV joint grease at the local parts store. It's pretty much the same stuff.

I use John Deere Corn Head Grease in the steering boxes, universal joints, and water pumps on my 35 Fords. It works very well for me and just about eliminated leakage in these areas. I wouldn't suggest using regular chassis lube grease in these locations unless you can find a good low melting point grease.

I too use the John Deere Corn Head grease in the same locations, steering box and universals. I can purchase this from John Deere agents in NZ so its shouldnt be a problem anywhere in the US. Just cleaned out 39 coupe steering box and given it the John Deere treatmnet. Good for eliminating those leaks which oil can sometimes cause in steering box.
