Default Correct Fan for 312 Y Block in 56 Merc ?

Is this the correct Fan for the 312 Y Block in 56 Mercurys? It is 18" as you can see from the Tape Measure.

I am quite sure that is what was on my 312 in my '57 Fairlane . I replaced it w/a 5 or 6 blade unit . I also installed a neat plastic shroud from a aftermarket supplier .
I know it was not original , but I never had any issues running hot .
No one could tell w/the hood closed ! - F F

Thank you gentleman. When I got my car back in 1988, the dismantled engine was in the trunk. I had a running 272 out of a local Customline that we fitted, however, it is not getting any oil up top, so needed attention. Rather than spending money on the 272, I decided to have the 312 rebuilt. I didn't get any of the Head Bolts, Push Rods or any other nuts, but have managed to get these from a friend who was into Y Blocks. It is coming along well. I thought that this Fan was part of it, so thanks again for identifying it for me. One less item that I have to look for.

I like your Mercury. I used to have a '55 Montclair that had the same roofline. My first car.

The above photos shows a 1955 Mercury Monterey Coupe. Unfortunately, the 1955 Ford Victoria and 1955 Mercury Monterey Coupes both got the high roofline while the 55 Ford Crown Victoria and 55 Mercury Montclair both got the low roofline. Any Mercurys built after 1948 are scarce in Australia. This 55 Monterey has been in Australia since near new. I once had the opportunity to but it many years back, but decided against it because of the high roofline. In 1956, all Ford and Mercury 2 door hardtops got the low roofline. A friend of mine owns this 55 Monterey, and it has been slightly modified. I am glad that my Merc has the low roofline.

I DID NOT KNOW THAT ...

Good Info and THANX...

Here is a picture of a 1955 Ford Fairlane Victoria. They all came with the High Roof, like the equivalent 1955 Mercury Monterey.
It wasn't until 1956 that all Ford and Mercury 2 door hardtops got the low roof.

I have been fooling around w/vintage Fords for 46 yrs. now , and I had never realized that there was a difference in the 55/56 roof heights . I knew the rear window was different between the two , but not a different height .Yes , I agree , the 56 roof is better looking ( & in better proportion w/the rest of the car ). Learning a lot on this site !

I'm going to tell you what.

A properly trimmed and detailed 56 VICTORIA is about the most beautiful car I have ever seen...

I like that green 55 Merc. , But, I would have to lose the spotlights, and the port holes.

I agree with scicala, 1956 Ford victorias look great. I love the low roof Lines on these cars/ This pair now reside in Australia. the top one even towed a Caravan over 2000 miles to attend this show, then had to do it all aging to get home. This body style was never sold new by Ford in Australia. While they are painted similar colours, they are two different cars.

I also like the '56 Customline Victoria. Same roofline, but with the Customline side trim. A little less flashy.

Yeah, it won't draw as much attention from revenooers late at night...

I always wondered why the 56 looked better than the 55. The roof line...

scicala said that he liked the 1956 Ford Customline Victoria. How about two of them?

The 1956 Ford Victoria was a late introduction. When the 56 Fords were first released, this body style was not offered. The date of the first Brochure for the 56 Fords is dated 8/55, and the Customline Victoria and Fairlane Fordor Victoria were absent. This Brochure was revised and dated 1/56 and added these two new releases. The other model to receive attention was the 56 Mainline, when Ford added some brightwork on what was previously a bare car, and painted the insert a second colour. Both Brochures have a similar cover, so a lot of people don't realise that there are two different Brochures. There could be more than two, but as we only got the 1956 Customline Fordor Sedan (plus a mainline Ute) in Australia, I cannot tell. I live too far away from the action.
