Default Antifreeze in engine

Hi Fordbarner's
When my engine is cold and there is no oil in the crankcase. I can remove the drain plug and about 1/2 quart of antifreeze comes out If there is oil in the crankcase and the engine is hot oil will stay clean ...no antifreeze. Can anyone explain what is going on with my engine ... It is a 1941 Ford coupe. I think the engine is a 29 B from a 1942 Ford . Any help will be appreciated ... Thanks ... Joe D

Dont understand why none in the pan when oil in it.I just reinstalled my engine after replacing all 4 pan rail core plugs. 2 had holes in them leaking AF into the oil pan. ken ct.

Their is no way for anti freeze to get into the oil pan unless the block is cracked or some of the flathead motors had two freeze plugs on bottom of block that the oil pan covers when bolted on. I would remove the pan and fill radiator and put a pressure tester on it and you will see where it is leaking from.

The block is cracked and its a wonder what metal will do when it is cold or hot. the metal wil open and close based on the heat of the metal. Its change the block or get a differnt engine time.

If someone used 46-48 pan gaskets on earlier engine with core plugs in the pan rails, the later gaskets do not completely cover the core plugs and if they start to leak, they will leak coolant into the pan. This is not and uncommon problem.

Here is a photo of the pan rails with new core plugs as you can see mine was also cracked. Zeke

Could be a blown head gasket leaking coolant into the combustion chambers and past the rings.

Hopefully that was it.Didn't see any cracks. Dont ever buy a intake manifold gasket from Mac's there garbage. Put 1 on 3 yrs ago and went to remove it this time and was like cemented to the intake alum manifold been scraping and scotch brites in a drill to get it off, Wasted about 3 hrs getting it off [in little pieces] I got 2 of them comming in from Fel-Pro. OMO ken ct. And it went on DRY NO NOTHING. go figure

It probably was "cemented" - when corrosion forms on aluminum you get complex oxides that are like concrete. This is caused by moisture in the air and the condensation inside the valve chamber. It is hard on these old cars to let them sit or to do short runs frequently. Next time put some grease on aluminum/gasket surface. Good Luck, Bob L

I use grease on both sides - just enough grease to coat the paper gasket, kinda rub it in....Bob L
