12 Volt Coil from Local Auto Parts Suppliers
Looking to purchase a 12 volt coil with internal resistor for my 1930 Model A. From the "search" section, I learned that NAPA has coils for a Model A. I recently contacted my NAPA store. They have two coils available, that appear will work in a Model A. Can someone verify that the following are the correct 12 volt coils with internal resistors that will fit the Model A:
1) ECHLIN No. IC14 @ $34.99 and 2) NAPA No. IC14SB @ $22.99? Has anyone installed either one, and if so would they do it again? Are there other specific coils available, like from Advance Auto, Auto Parts, O'Reilly, etc? If so, what are there specific part numbers? Thanks. |

Re: 12 Volt Coil from Local Auto Parts Suppliers
Had to go out to the shop to get the boxes in order to get this right. I use a STANDARD T Series UC15T on my 12 volt cars. Stamped on the Coil are the words "12V No External Resistor Required".
On my 6 volt car I use the STANDARD T Series UC14T. Stamped on the Coil are the words 6V No External Resistor Required. STANDARD brand can be gought at several of the big box Auto Stores. Cost varies from about $20 to $35. |

Re: 12 Volt Coil from Local Auto Parts Suppliers
Just make a Tel. call to the other Suppliers, tell them the ECHLIN #'s to Cross Reference them to their Brand and Part # with the Price. You will be able to tell if the Person on the Phone at the other Suppliers has any Automotive Knowledge, they will within a few seconds Cross Reference the Part Numbers.
Usually you will get someone who has NO Knowledge to do this. They simply will want the Application to what Year Vehicle you have, to let the Computer do the Work, and tell you they have No Listing for the Application, Sorry!!! |

If they still exist you may find a mom and pop parts store to be quite helpful.

Regardless of brand, the only way to know for sure what you are getting is to take an ohmmeter with you to the store. Pull the coil out of the box and measure the resistance across the posts. You want about 3 ohms for a 12 volt car, not about 1.5 ohms. This removes all doubt.

Purdy ;
Double the power of the original coil . Mind quantifying this . Showed the NAPA fellow my coil .I asked him if he had one . He asked me what is it . I left . |

Re: 12 Volt Coil from Local Auto Parts Suppliers
Duffy , The original slant pole model A coils put out arround 20.000 volts. The Flame thrower coil is 40.000 volts. My thought is that the parts counter replacement coils won't be as strong as an original slant pole coil.
If you can find a parts store that has an older parts man that knows older cars , you can get a coil that will work but will probably be nearly as expensive as a performance coil. Good luck ! I know how it is trying to get anything for the model A from some of the younger counter guys . |

They don't list a coil for 12 volt use on the model A.

Re: 12 Volt Coil from Local Auto Parts Suppliers
Most any tractor parts supply also, TSC, and Mills Fleet Farm will have both the 6 volt and the 12 volt coil with internal resistor. Many of the older tractors are 6 volt, and yes evan positive ground!! Just like the Model A. I have used these coils on tractors and my A, work just fine. Most NAPA stores have them also, if they can't find it listed for an A Ford (yes Model A fords ARE in their books, I just saw it this summer when I was looking for a fan belt and went to my local NAPA store) A 1948, 1949, 1950, Chev Pickup also was 6 volt and used a coil, they can look those up also.
