Sealed beam headlight 40 ford
I cannot find a reasonable cost source for the stock 6volt head light on a 40 ford. I think, Bob Drake has them for 25 dollars each. Looking for the non halogen ones.
Will the 6006H Halogen sealed beams work with stock wiring? They seem to be more common. |

Re: Sealed beam headlight 40 ford
I personally wouldn't use halogen lights in my 6v cars. They can draw a lot of current and I would hate to tax my wiring or headlight or dimmer switch. Someone posted here that there are newer halogen lights that don't draw so much current but I am not taking that chance. Many use a relay with them to prevent too much current going through the light switch.

Re: Sealed beam headlight 40 ford
There are several listings for Wagner 6006 sealed beams on eBay that are cheaper than BD, e.g., https://www.ebay.com/itm/7-6-Volt-Seal-Beam-Headlamp-Bulb-Ford-1940-55-/142669282640

I switched to halogens in my A 15 years ago, changed nothing except the bulbs, i found that I could reduce the charge rate and have brighter light ---with the stock generator |

Re: Sealed beam headlight 40 ford
The modern 6 volt headlight bulbs have the alignment tits on them that will interfere with the headlight bezel on the 40 . They can be ground off if you use lots of patience and plenty of water to keep them cool. Of course use an air grinder and don't get aggressive.

Gezer.....Barnfind08 is a regular here on FordBarn. He runs a side business selling quality NOS Ford parts. Imagine being able to buy brand new eighty-year-old FORD stuff. He will not answer your question on the forum in respect for the forum rules. All you need to do is send a PM (personal message) to barnfind08. He'll get right back to ya. DD

If you have never done a PM, go to the name over his avatar and click on it. There will be a drop down menu. The second option is for PMs.

Re: Sealed beam headlight 40 ford
If you want to have good 6v headlights on a Ford you have to install a relay in the headlight system. The use of a relay will supply full voltage to the headlights, while only requiring minimum draw through the switch.
When I put sealed beam head lights on my '36 in 1952, I installed a relay in the system, mounting same on the fender splash pan, my head lights have always worked great..

Re: Sealed beam headlight 40 ford
JSeery s right, that thing is a circuit breaker not a relay. The current comes from the circuit breaker to the switch, then to the headlights via the dimmer. IF there is a short it breaks the circuit to avoid a wiring fire. I have seen them cut in and out repeatedly.

Relay suggestion was in relation to halogen lights only.

Re: Sealed beam headlight 40 ford
A close look at my Avatar will reveal that the headlights on my '36 are 1940 Chevy headlight pods fitted to the fenders in lieu of the stock Ford lights. I harvested the entire system off of a '40 Chevy, including the wiring, switch and relay. I don't recall Ford's having relays in the headlight system in the early '40's, where-as GM did.
I believe it is a well known fact that 6v systems have very high resistance, that is why larger wire is used, compared to a 12v system. Supplying the power to the headlights via a relay makes a big difference as to how bright the lights are.
