Default leaking steering gear assembly

I have a 1936 Ford steering gear assembly that appears usable, except fluid leaks through the lower bearing and out past the plate and tube assembly. Is there a seal or gasket that goes in there? The 1937 sketch in the Green Book doesn't show any and a purchased gasket set for the steering gear assembly doesn't seem to have anything that would fit around the tube and above the plate. What can I do? Thanks

Well, would Ford design and produce leaky steering gear assemblies on the line . . . . . ?

Thousands, one after one, saying, well boys, we gotta do somethin' about that one 'a these days. Obviously not. Chevy was outsellin' Ford in those days, despite the V8, Henry's answer to Chev's 'six'.

"What do I do?" There are sage Ford Barners. (I wish I was one.) They'll 'come up' with an answer.

highbeams runnin' on lowbeams with this problem. . . .

There is a gasket there, but usually the problem is that Ford just crimped the brass tube onto the end plate, and often times they leak after several decades ! The fix is to remove the end plate with the brass tube and silver solder the tube where it goes thru the plate. The easy fix is many folks like to use John Deere corn head grease in the box as it becomes solid when cold, and fluid when warm so maybe "less" messy

My leak problem proved to be the two lower bolts of the four that hold the end plate on.
I put some silicone in there, just filled the bolt threads and- problem solved.
The two bolts go all the way though, and the leak was through the threads.

"Will D" had the same situation in his '38 steering box a while back. Click the link below to Will's thread on how he repaired his.
