Default Fire Hazard

What's the main cause/reason of a fire with the A's?

Second is the starter rod coming off and hitting the battery connection on top of the starter.

Leaking gas gauge and sparking ignition switch.

I'm with Big Hammer. Rotten non fused wiring... not a good thing.

After reading, on here I think, about an AA burning up due to electrical short, I've been learning to pull the fuse on the starter when I'm done. Even new cars catch fire, so a 90 year old one is maybe a little more prone.

My CCPU doesn't have a "fuse on the starter", but it does have a "battery disconnect" switch.

This is why you firmly grab your air filter, and throw it as far away from your car as possible...an air maze is different, so it don't count

Fuel + oxygen + ignition source + sustained reaction = fire. And while the gory details of the "most common" situations are helpful, its the situation (however uncommon) that you miss that creates the fire.

And the best fuel source sits basically in your lap.. Ford faced a number of legal issues with the cowl mounted fuel tank..you can imagine what todays lawyers would do with it..I can see the TV ads now “If you had a 28 to 31 ford, contact Lowball and Lynch today, you could be entitled to financial compensation”

All cars should carry a fire extinguisher. The battery disconnect will eliminate an electrical short when parked and could save a car if a short develops when driving. Both should be accessible.

The fire extinguisher should be rated for electrical, gasoline, and other combustibles. The standard extinguishers are bulky. I carry this one: https://elementfire.com/ which is smaller and attaches to the underside of the tank with a magnet.

nkaminar, Which model did you buy? The E50 or E100? The magnetic clip shown for $15. as well or did you make your own?

One thing I like about these extinguishers is they "effectively puts out fires without the mess, toxicity, or maintenance associated with a traditional extinguisher."

I bought the E50 and the clip. I have the E50 in my modern truck, the travel trailer, and the kitchen too. The E100 lasts longer (100 seconds) so if you are very concerned about fire that would be the one to get. It is more expensive, but a fire is going to be a lot more expensive.

I had one on by sail boat too but I also had 6 of the traditional fire extinguishers and a old halogen extinguisher in the engine compartment. The original owner of the boat had a fire pump driven by the main engine. He sailed the boat around the world. When you are out in the middle of the ocean you want to be sure to be able to put out a fire.

At least there would be lots of water available.

It didn't seem to work very well for the electric VWs on the boat last month.
