Yes I do fill it full but I have a burp tank on it. It does not overflow.

My '40 was overheating (on the gauge) and getting the point gap right and advancing the timing made a significant difference!

A 50 engine has the thermostats in the goose necks. The top hoses on a 50 are smaller in diameter which could restrict the flow. They make goose necks for your engine for the 1 3/4" hoses. G.M.

Mike in Az. Temp gauge on the left side is the dash (elec). Mechanical on the right side reads 170 degrees. Temp on left reads max with new sending unit. It's definately the gauge. I tried the cardboard deflectors and it worked great. No more overheating, although, I believe it probably wasn't really overheating, but, just a bad gauge. Now I can order nice upper and lower deflectors. Thanks everyone for your advice.
