Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
I have a 47 pickup transmission. How do I go about converting it to a closed drive?

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
Same transmission as the 39. Just need to swap the output shaft and the rear bearing retainer. I am sure some one here ot on the HAMB would gladly swap. If I did not already have the parts for the open drive shaft I would take you up on a trade. I am sure Jim Brieley here on Fordbarn would have the parts you need also. Rod

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
Not! The later pu has modern springs on either side which will not allow the rear end to move as it does with the traverse spring. In addition to the trans. you would have to have a correct ring gear and pinion for the closed type driveline. Not sure of what the torque tube length would be and that is another thing to consider.

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
I am gathering parts for the same, but am using a 42-47 pu rearend center section, so I can have an open drive shaft. I have not located a set of 35-36 axle hsgs yet to complete modified narrowed rearend. It will be atleast another year before I need them, so still plenty of time. Thankfully i have a 47 pu transmission in good shape, so that was the easy part. Rod

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
There is a lot I have not decided on. I came up on two Mercury v8's. I'm thinking about using one I them. I found a guy with a beat up 41 sedan. And trying to get the rear out of it. And the backing plates and drums and spindles. I would like to use a 32 k member. But I got the f1 crossmember for free. So I'm going to use it.

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
Sounds like we are on the same budget. I have the 47 pu center crossmemeber from the one I parted out, other than that I would have looked for something else also. So far I have about $470 into the project. It started with a rear coupe section I was given by my Great Uncle when I was helping clean stuff up. Still need to go get the 53 Mainline from that deal. Hopefully that will help with parts I need to buy for the chassis and maybe a replacement right quarter panel. Rod

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
If I do not find a set over the winter locally I will let you know. There are 3 sets locally, but they are all still under what is left of the cars. Was on "Junk Jaunt" and at Freemont swapmeet this last weekend and will see what becomes of the leads and contacts in the next few months. Thanks Rod

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
Rowdy I'm going to be doing a 29 Roadster. I would like to do a pre war style lakes roadster. Trying my best to do as much of it in pre war ford parts.

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
Aiming for slightly postwar at the newest. Likely will sell my 37 21 stud and opt for the 59A instead. It was my original intention to use the 21 stud just to be alittle different, but think that idea is headed the other way. Rod

Re: Open drive to closed drive trans conversion
I keep looking for a good 21 stud. They are hard to come by around here. I don't know where pre war stops. But I figure a 41 engine would be pre war. I like the sound of the 21 stud.
