what is the best way to stop the cam from turning while tightening the cam nut ? cam is installed in the engine. I have a fiber gear and i'm afraid of breaking teeth (on the gear) if I hold it by stopping the crank from turning

I think there was a comment recently to use a rag in the teeth of the gear to aoid damage. Bob

Avoid... not aoid. my fingers are mostly thumbs. Too many blows from the shingling axe, I guess. Bob

I think we had the car in gear when we replaced ours.

I have always been told to remove the starter motor and place a block of wood between the flywheel ring gear and the flywheel housing. This way the gear can be removed unharmed.

I like the rag method the best. If you use a locked crankshaft to hold the cam gear, all that pressure is on one tooth of a fiber gear.

Put a rag between the teeth, put the transmission in high, block the wheels so it does not move, and apply force gradually with breaker bar and a camshaft nut removal tool. I have used the cold chisel method, dont recommend it.

What method would you use on an aluminum gear, engine not in the car, flywheel not on engine ? How many foot pounds torque ?

That's what I would do, and if you need to clamp it in a vice use a couple short pieces of wood 1 x 4.

I just clamp the cam in a vise with copper jaws, and tighten with an impact wrench.

I do it different than most. I take the side cover off then put a strong clamp on the gear then it will not hurt the teeth.

ive used the correct cam nut wrench with no luck . i use a chisel with the end ground flat , so as not to cut , & lock tite (red) . seems to work good for me ....... steve

How many foot pounds of torque is recomended ?

If I remember correctly it is 100 tf.-lbs.

I ended up putting a 2x4 between the block and crank and made a practice tightening with the old cam gear with no broken teeth so I put the new gear back on and snugged up to 100lbs . I feel better now.
the engine is out of car on engine stand going back together
