Horn question
I've never figured out who made my horn, and now I'm wondering if it's a repo.
It has never worked good, and I've always thought it was connections. I was putting new brushes and springs in , and the field terminals are spades that were between the inside of the nutted end of the brush holder, with the spring against the other side. Les Andrews shows a ring terminal between the outside nutted end and the insulating washer. My question is, we're any stock horns equipped with this spade terminal on the field to brush connections? Thanks |

Re: Horn question
Funny thing our club had a horn seminar today, and I learned a few things from experienced hands. On all of the horns we discussed there were terminals connecting the field coil wires to the brushes. I didn't think to take pictures at the time Also on the other end of the field coil wires the wires are or should be soldered to the clips. The wires usually yellow and blue, external from the horn with bullet ends slip under those clips. Something I didn't realize is that the gaskets sold today are too thin and need to be thicker. I doubled up on thin gaskets both sides of the diaphragm and my horn sounds better than ever. I had to scratch a lot of paint on my Ames to find the brand name and it isn't a very well stamp as far as depth, paint covered it with one coat. Look at your bracket, I found a stamp on it on the opposite side that it bolts to the horn.

Re: Horn question
After looking at the website, I think mine is the Stewart Warner, even though I cannot find a name, because it is the inch and an eighth bracket, and quarter inch shaft. It also has the spades like on Tom's picture. I just put it together but I put them on the opposite end of the spring and I don't want to take apart again at this time. Too many other things to wrap so I can get back to driving. It sounds pretty good overall, now that everything is clean.thanks for your input.

Re: Horn question
You really should switch the spade terminals to be next to the brush.
If the current happens to pass through the spring it will heat up and take the temper out. |
