a friend of mine had the same thing happen to him. it was the ring gear on the flywheel that was trying to come off. it was hitting the starter bolts.

Happened to me too. I took a look through the starter hole and then tapped the ring gear back in place with a big hammer and drift. First symptom was the starter not engaging reliably, but I missed that thinking it was a worn Bendix.

Now when the starter acts up I just take out the big hammer. The ring gear needs pinning to the flywheel someday.

Most ring gears are installed by heating the ring gear. When hot install on the flywheel; it will shrink and should never come loose.

Same thing happened to me. On first startup after installing my reconditioned motor there was a hellava clonking noise, as though something really expensive had broken. But then the noise just stopped and has never recurred ! I'm guessing a stray bolt was left in there and got jammed into some crevice by the ring gear or flywheel. Scary when it happened though, as I had just spent squillions on the recon job.
