Glenn, just a couple little tips.
I got some clear plastic (very thin) and made a gasket for each base,
that I cut to just a hair bigger than the base, so you could barely see
it but at least helped cushion the base on the paint.

I also drilled the mirror stud holes so the vertical glass run was centered
between the 2 mirror mounting studs. Then I still had to get my wife
with her thin arms and little hands to get up in there to start the nuts
with (built in washers) started onto the studs... easy peasy
