Default another "Newbie" question.

While tinkering with my new "A" I noticed that the crank pulley is loose. While moving the fan back / forth I can see there is 1 - 2" of back & forth play on the crank Pulley (crank not moving). Was hoping the ratchet nut was loose & tried tightening the nut with the crank handle but did not help.
I assume there is a woodruff key on the crank/pulley. How major a job is this to repair. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Leadpot

Looks like you got one of those no good 2 piece pullys. Yes it is a problem. Good idea at the time. Change it to a one piece!

Is the car ok to drive until I can get the pully replaced? Any danger of it coming apart. Sure don't want to damage the radiater.

If it's a typical cast iron 2 piece pulley it's already broke and just a heart beat away from flying off there in pieces.

Leadpot,
Do not drive it. It can fly apart and do damage you will regret. Replace it with a good one-piece. You can do that without pulling the radiator. You have to loosen the radiator and do some careful rearranging, but it can be done, at least on a 1930 model; I just did this two years ago.

If it is already a one piece, it might just not have been tightened down adequately; get a correct ratchet nut wrench and try tightening the nut. These things will take some torque. I've never been successful tightening it any other way.

One other note: I got an engine back once where the "rebuilder" had put a lock washer under the nut. The nut would never tighten up, and I couldn't figure it out till I pulled the pulley. I would be surprised if this could happen again, but some other fool might have done the same thing with your engine.
