Over Drive
i started a new thread, thinking if i added to the old one you fella's might miss it.
I bought a 1930 Tudor today that has an OD. The fellow I got it from knew nothing about it, except it works. It has a push and pull knob fastened to the steering column, a cable going back to the OD also a toggle switch and a light that lights when the switch is activated. It is mounted back at the rear end, there is a small motor? sticking out of the side of the OD. can any one tell me what brand it is, and is reliable? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Over Drive
Based on your comment "small motor sticking out the side" I would say it is a Early V8 Borg-Warner converted to fit a Model A. That "motor" is actually a solenoid used to engage the OD. The caution with them is you MUST take it out of OD before backing up.
There are many of them installed and they seem to work well. Some one that has one will surely chime in. I have had several installed in other cars in years past and liked the way they work.

Re: Over Drive
Ditto the remark about do NOT back up while in O/D.

Re: Over Drive
Hi without a doubt you have Borg Warner OD. Very common way to add OD to the Model A, in the 60's & 70's. I have one in my 31 Roadster P/U since 1995. Works great, a little tall gearing at 33%. on the other side of the od you may find a governor, it drops the OD out of overdrive at about 27mph. To operate get up to 40-45 push to cable down, let off the gas and flip the switch, within a 1-2 seconds the light should come on indication your in OD. If not turn off switch, get up to 40-45 and try again, when first flip the switch on your ammeter should go way discharge until the solenoid pulls in and your in OD.
Have fun if you have more questions ask, other will also chime in. |
