Perhaps if we took seriously the well-meaning yet ignorant questions of the unwashed the state of our hobby would be different. My 2 cents.
Yup, I agree. Reply back with basic facts, give them good information. At best you might foster some interest in someone, especially a youngun. At worst, you wont be the remembered as the person who gave bad information when they find out the truth down the road. They talk because they are interested/fascinated in what you have, I have learned that people, when interested in a subject will talk about it, whether they know what they are talking about or not.

Furthermore they are actually relaying the bad information that was told to them by the last guy, hence perpetuating the very problem that is your pet peeve, lack of knowledge by the general public.

People that equate TV shows to what I do with my cars.I've never seen any of these shows,so I don't really know what they're about.I have heard of a pickers show, and I heard of the pawn star show. Here, porn is pronounced pawn by the natives,so for a long time I thought there was a show about porn stars.I see lots of cars bought by people that watched TV,then went out, bought a car,and attempted to take it apart to build something. No tools,no torch,no welder,no garage, and not a clue as to what they were trying to do.They buy hubcaps, chrome goodies, seat covers, and let the car sit out in the weather until somebody like me come along and buy it for 1/10 of the value it had before they monkeyed with it,and ruined it.I know of a Camaro that was bought on a whim to fix up.The T-top rubber was getting bad,so he removed it.Then, the plan was to order new rubber,it's been three years, the T-tops are sitting on the car,no rubber,I looked in the car this winter while plowing along next to it.The ice was at the level of the tops of the seat cushions.Flush with the shifter boot. The owner said, well,we're gonna buy a new interior anyway. It didn't NEED one in the first place. It does now. This car has gone from a nice driver to a parts car.

Dick Goder from Cleveland Channel 8 held a Woolybear Festible in Vermilion, Ohio. It parade was about 4 hours long. As those with different original colored Model A's would pass the grandstand. Goder would make the remark about "You can buy a Ford in any color as long as it was black" Each year the line of A's got smaller and ended up behind the horses at the end.

I wasn't the only one T'd off about this.

I think everyone tries to be polite and have an intelligent conversation with those that come and comment about whatever it is that you're showing. But, there are just some down-right stupid people out there. I don't blame folks for not taking the time to show their vehicles anymore.

I love the smiles and questions about the cars. I guess my pet peeve is trying to make an 80 + year old car run, ride, steer and have the amenities of a new Lexis. Just my opinion, I might be wrong.

People who honk their horns while I'm driving. I know it's a compliment but it spooks me. I always think I'm in somebody's way or perhaps a part fell off.

One phenomenon I have noticed that truly irks me is when a young driver is behind me and although I am keeping up with the traffic flow I look like I am slow. They dart past only to duck back into my lane in front of me and hit the brakes totally ignorant of the fact that it takes me a much longer distance to stop than it does them.
This happens a lot to me.

I guess the worst thing about A's are some of the people that try to buy them. Not quite as bad a British bike buyers, but pretty close.I've sold a lot of stuff over the years, but only a couple of A's.I do not want to get involved in selling A's.I've heard things like,I deduct $4000.on the price of every A for a paint job. Also,I deduct $3500.for the price of an engine,we don't know what this one will need. These people walk in thinking they are going to set MY price for me.I set my price knowing what the rodders will pay.If I hear the words,I never pay asking price, any price drop I had in mind just went out the window. They're not buying from me.I had a fellow drive hundreds of miles to look at a roadster pickup I had.I overdescribed the truck, and made it VERY clear the price was firm.I told him, don't drive all the way here thinking you will make me an offer,so come prepared to pay the price or walk away.He just kept saying,ya,ya,ya,we'll see when I get there. He offered me less than half of what I wanted. He got pretty mad when I said no.I told you,$15,000, and not $14,995.I sold it for $14,500 a day later.

Along those lines, not long ago I pulled up to a traffic light and stopped. I left a car length between the me and the car in front of me. Then this young gal pulls up behind me with a phone stuck her ear and the radio blasting. She must have thought there was too much room in front of me and pulled out, passed me on the right and pulled in front of me. There was not enough room for her to straighten up so she sat there at about a 45º angle. I just then eased up on her to within a foot and blipped the horn just to get her attention, she was oblivious and just took off like her ass was on fire when the light turned and seemed to be upset that the car in front of her wasn't going fast enough. Have I mentioned before that there are a lot of stupid people in this world.

Pet Peeves:

"Is it for sale?" or "Do you want to sell it?" I really hate these unsolicited offers (or fake offers). Sometimes I like to say, "I was asking $20,000, but for you I'll take $30,000." My brother is a little more direct -- on occasion he'll ask, "Do you see an &$%#@* for sale sign on this car?"

"What is it worth?" or "What did you pay for it?" Boy, I can do without these two questions too.

"Are you going to put a 350 in it?" That will never happen.

I have a 1937 Ford and can do without the PT Cruiser comparisons.

"Why don't you restore it?" I usually say, "It was, during World War II". Some get it, some don't. I had one young person ask "When was that?" .... I had to walk away, fast. I just didn't have the time to start a history class in a parking lot.

I have a bunch, "Ole School" at the top, mint, rare, excellent condition. Oh another one in the top 2 or 3, "I'm gonna restore it someday". You would not believe how many "32 Ford coupes" my buddy has seen out west hunting or passed on the road. "There is no rust in it". He wants this much $$$ for it until you get there and he actually wants this much $$$$$$.

Finding a car that has been sitting in the same place on four flats under an inch of dust for 30 years and hearing from the owner "Oh no, I can't sell that. It was so special to Grandpa that he wanted me to have it!"

I guess mine is those who touch everything. My worst was the lady who took down the "do not touch" sings so she could get better photos of her kids in the car. At a museum event I asked a guy who approved him putting his kids in the car. He said "it is just an old car and its free." I pointed out his errors and he grabbed his kids and wife and stomped off making loud noises. To everyone's delight he found that he had locked his keys in his car and this was Sunday afternoon. It was a long wait in the weeds for the lock smith to show up. Once a lady put her purse with the 4 steel nubs on the bottom on my freshly painted fender. I asked for the amount of $$ it had cost me and she huffed off saying she would never return. Two minutes later a "Gramma" was sitting on my running board to catch her breath. She apologized for sitting on my car. I said" any time" and sat beside her and talk about the good old days. What a difference. 99% percent of our guests are super

A few years back I dove my A to the local store to pick up bread or milk. When I came out there was a gentleman in his 80's sitting behind the wheel of my A. At first I was a little upset till we started to talk. He told me how he had dated his wife in a tudor like mine. Even the same color. So he couldn't help himself to get behind the wheel. It brought back memoirs. At the end I found out his wife had passed away a few days ago.

Since then I'm always open to people talking to me about the car and the touching. (except brats and people with rings) after all we all are getting older and maybe be in that person's shoes.
