Two piece crank pulley ordeal
My original pulley failed so to save some work, I ordered from one of our favorite suppliers the 2 piece pulley. Installed it and torqued to spec. After about 500 miles started to knock. Removed and installed another new 2 piece pulley. This time only got about 180 miles till I noticed a slight knock again. Removed pulley and the picture shows what I found again. Look on the mating part in the upper picture and you will see a small gap that developed and grew until it knocked. I gave up on the 2 piece and went to my old disassembled engine and removed the one piece original type from the crank. Installed and have had no further problem in 2000 miles. I do not recommend the two piece pulley. Expensive lesson.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
the one I got from Snyders is almost a press fit it was so snug. Absolutely no play. Had to scrape the paint i used off it to actually put it on.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
I purchased both from Snyders . Both had a very slight (almost imperceptible) play. I was suspicious of the second one which was like the first. Installed it anyway since I had paid for it. Thought I had installed it possibly incorrectly. Snyder's replaced with out charge the first pulley but the second one was also faulty. Gave up and did not complain to Snyder as I am usually very satisfied with the quality and service.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
in what way did the original pulley fail?
the pulley must be proud of the crank else it will not tighten up correctly and cause the type of problems you are having

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
tbirdtbird: Picture of the failed pulley. Yes I was aware of the need to have the pulley with the crank not protruding so as to draw the pulley tight against the crank shaft.

I agree Bill. I tried to find one but could not find where to get that.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
Had the same rattling problem. I chucked th ratch nut in the lathe and cutting relief in the center of the nut, leaving a ring around the outer part of the nut.
This allowed the ratch nut to clamp the pulley before bottoming out on the end of the cank. JB

I "think" I got it from Sacramento Vintage Ford. They're easily overlooked in catalogs, as they look like a stock pulley pic. Read all the fine print & you'll find one I used a little blue Loctite, on the L/H threads, but I'm a wurry WORT, among other things---LOL Bro Bill W.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
I got a 2 piece from Snyder's it was so tight a fit I had to use the bolt to press it on and had to use a washer to keep the bolt from bottoming out never had a problem with it once I got it installed only took about 4 hours to get it to go on

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
I guess I have to conclude that the failure was my fault. I must have had the crank extending enough so that the pulley did not seat against the crank. How, I don't know because I was aware of the need to consider that. But, I think the fault must have been me. Anyway I have had no problem with my spare engine's original pulley for over a year now. I appreciate all your comments. I learn something almost every time when on Fordbarn.

" no problems with spare engine's original pulley"
exactly...original pulley. Not all repop pulleys are 100% correct

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
The only time I've seen the sleeve part of a one piece pulley damaged, it was caused by forcing the pulley on without the key and slot properly lined up.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
Beware that some of the new 1 piece pulleys are not correctly made and the spokes may hit the front motor mount. I had one that 1 spoke cleared, 1 barely hit and the other hit hard. Naturally I installed with the crank in a position with the non hitting one next to the MM - so a person may want to check this before buttoning up. Pulley came from a respected vendor and they
replaced with no problem, but it sure was a lot of work for not checking. John |

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
Just to clarify: I did remove the original pulley from the disassembled engine and installed it on my Fordor with the problem. This was done a year ago when I did not know how to insert a picture on Fordbarn so I did not post all this until now. 2000 miles later and NO further problems

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
Perhaps, but if so it ran for 9000 miles until it chucked the chunk. Came that way from a well respected engine rebuilder. Anyway, I am happy to have it fixed now. I appreciate amll the comments amnd do believe that Snyders failed pulleys were caused by myself as so many have, not had problems with the 2 piece.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
I think George is right. There really isn't any other reason for a pulley to break like that.Just why it was loose I don't know.Ratchet threads bottom out?Burrs,so when it felt tight it really wasn't?Probably a few other reasons for it to be loose. If you look at it real close with a magnifying glass you are going to see a shiny ring at the very end of the bore,on the engine side. Then,on the bolt end you are going to see another one where the crank ended.Without seeing the pulley I am going to venture a guess that you will also see an imprint of the hex of the ratchet on the face of the pulley.

Re: Two piece crank pulley ordeal
I think George and Kieth are right. It's been a year since but I still have the pulley. I'll try to look as you advised, Kieth and see what I can see. Only thing is: Why did the old original pulley from my spare engine not give the same problem as that is what I put on?
Thanks
