Default Sport coupe belt moulding?

I have an earlyn28 sport coupe that I am about to paint. I am a little confused about The belt molding as seen on the business coupe. Did the sport coupe have this also? If so mine is missing. If so, does anyone have any????? I am wanting to move forward with the painting very soon. Thanks for your assistance!

I've been looking for one of these for three years. Nada. There are two parts, and they are very hard to find.

I have also heard this about the Special Coupe trim. Are they all the same part?

As I understand it they are the same. There were 2 at an auction in SD. in 2006. I have not seen any since. Dad needs one for his special coupe also as half of his is missing. I know someone who knows where another complete top for a special coupe is and am trying to make arrangements to go look at it and hope that piece is there. Rod

There was a company that reproduced the special 29 business coupe top bows a couple years ago, and they said they were looking into making the belt pieces too. But I don't think it happened. When I talked to them about 18 months ago they said it was a compound complex curve and the ends were also difficult, and altogether it was a pretty hard pair of pieces to make.

That's exacially the piece I'm looking for on my Special Coupe. The one I have was nailed on! I'd try to clean mine up and try to reuse it but I haven't seen a good pic of what a good one should look like.

On 11/2/2011 Barry B. posted that he used a section of brass trim purchased from Universal Tire, held on with brass screws. Sounds like a good idea. Type in " brass belt trim" in the search section to read his post.

Universal Tire has a "DD" moulding under the wheel hardware category. $48 for a 7 foot length of brass. Seems reasonable if you have nothing to start with.

If you get stuck you can use a 1" aluminum trim piece with the edges rounded off. Then screw it on and fill the screw heads. The original was a two piece inner and outer moulding where the inner nailed on to the wood and the top part snapped over it. I have an aluminum moulding what appears to be used on the Canadian cars and it screws on. I'm looking for the steel one but after 24 years I haven't found one yet.

I've had my special coupe since 1962 and never come across a belt moulding. There are two piece mouldings at every tack strip associated with the top decking.
The belt moulding is two piece. The first is nailed and the top metal piece snaps over the base. If you only have the base, you can drill through the wood and use toilet bowl T bolts. The T head will engage the edges of the base moulding and use nuts on the inside. Fill the excess nail holes in the base moulding and it works.

The belt mouldings were reproduced for a time but not now. I purchased a reproduction base and top piece but have not tried to fit them. Another project is ahead of the second restoration of the Special coupe.

There is a product that you use in tubing to support the tube as you form it to keep it from kinking. One might try to form tubing to replacate the compound curve shape of the base moulding then cut the excess material and attached using the T bolts. Just a thought.

Mine has been on for 30 years and still looks good, bought it from Universal Tire, bends fairly easy. Start in the center of the back and use 1/2 inch long # 8 brass flat head wood screws about 6" apart. Cut off and smooth the ends and you will have 6-8" left over. Looks identical to the original steel clip on.

I have one that is virtually perfect. The guy who bought the sport coupe body never paid me the last $500. That's what I want for it. Alfi (408) 354-3875

Hey thanks guys. I believe mine was assembled in Vancouver BC and the belt looks like it was originally screwed on (probably with Robertson screws). I think the previous owner(s) tried the copper tubing trick behind the quarter windows. The copper moulding sure seems like the way to go.
Thanks Again!!
