Passenger Emergency Brake

I attached some pictures of the passenger emergency brake. Can you guys look at it and verify I have it all on there correctly? With it on, when I put the hub on it does not want to spin. With the emergency brake band off the hub spins. The emergency brake has brand new lining, would that need to be sanded down any? Thanks for the help.

I don't see anything wrong. Do you have new cast iron drums?

Back in the 60's I bought some of those lightweight 3 legged jack stands, and had one collapse on me. Luckily I only got a bump and a rude awakening. I would never work on a car or slide under a car with those. A new set of 4 leg stands with a cast iron ratchet post is much cheaper than any doctor bill.

I don't know if it makes a difference but my cotter pins were facing out when I disassembled mine. Why don't you just adjust the e-brake rod 1 turn and see if it helps.

There's also a large hydrolic jack in the middle that isn't visible but thanks for the warning I will have to look for some.

Do you mean the rod that runs to the handle in the car? If so those are not hooked up yet.

It seems to me that the two ends of the shoe is to high. Look at the ten O'clock position of the back plate, it looks as if the rivets ends are too high, which raises the two ends of the shoe too far above the mounting plate. Also the shoe is supposed to fit around the entire mounting plate. Check if the shoe is properly posisioned on the opposite side. Open it up slightly and hook around the back plate.

Here's the last one I did about a year ago. The new cast drums slipped on fine. The customer had the new shoes and drums waiting for me, so I suppose he might have had the drums turned after they were swaged, but I didn't have to sand the parking brake lining.

On the 1930 AA truck I worked on, I did have to use my belt sander on the parking brake linings before the drums would slip on.

I've seen some problems when the studs were welded to the drum, but as long as they are correctly swaged I've seen them either way with no problems. Where the toggles are pinned to the ends of the parking brake band, the brackets have an offset that lays against the carrier, so the bands must go on with the offset facing in.

Can anybody post a good close picture of the passenger side with the e-brake on. Tom W. do you have a picture of the other side like the one you posted of the drivers side? Do you sand the lining like you would anything else.

I don't have a picture of the right rear, but it would be a mirror image of the left.
In fact I think there is a computer program to do the mirror image of my picture.

If you installed new linings and rivets, the rivets at the ends fit into a counter sink. The head of the rivet needs to be flush with the band if not it needs to be cleaned up. Also the trailing edge might need a little beveling, yours looks squared off in the photo.

Tom on the band itself where the toggle links hook on does the flat part face out or in on the wheel?

Bill W. you are right about keeping one side done and working on the other but in our case he had no e-brakes on this car to start.

Redmodelt. You are correct. We did not bevel the edges. I will do that today. Do you think that will help the hub to go on easier?

If you ever HAVE to use the emergency brake, like on a downhill run away, apply it VERY slow & easy ! A friend applied his suddenly, it ripped out the lining rivets & the band was like a PRETZEL, without salt on it!

Hi Foats. I do see what your talking about. The rivets are tight on the other side of the band. What do you think we can do to get that to lay down flat?

Emergency brakes are often confusing. Remember, parts catalogs often have EXPLODED views, which can be a help.

Early parking brake bands have forged fittings for the toggles to pin to, and later bands had stamped.
These two pictures show the difference, and the bottom side in each picture is the side that MUST be against the carrier plate.
