Default Small Ford Sixes 144, 170

I am looking for info on these tiny engines from early falcons and such.
Are the 144 and 170 basically the same engines with slightly different bore and stroke, or are there any other differences?

They are the same design. The crankshafts are different stroke but bores are the same diameter. The 170 crank may use a damper instead of a pulley and there are likely other differences too but they are likely more subtle.

The 144-200 ci Ford straight Six were all basically the same but with different bore and stroke configurations. The 250ci block has a higher deck to accommodate the longer stroke. With the larger displacements the block was upgraded to have seven main bearings to make it more reliable. I think the early blocks had four mains.

There was also a 300 cid straight 6. I had an Econoline pickup at one time and I stuffed one into it.

Does the 170 have 7 main bearings?

Pretty sure the 144, 170 and 200 all had 5 main bearings.

The 250 (different block) had 7.

Now that I think about it, I think they are 4 main bearing engines and not 5.

The 170 special came out in 1964 so all the earlier ones are 4-main types. The later engine was 7-main 200CID type so ID has to be made to tell which one your looking at other wise it would have to have the pan off to see the mains. I think they had metal tags bolted to the side after 1964 and the CID was stamped on there.

I had a 70 Maverick with a 200 six. I had a spare 250 engine from another wrecked '70 Maverick and used the head from it on the 200 after I did a valve job on it. The valves were the same in both heads. I recall the push rods were different between them.
The 200 had a Carter YF while the 250 had a Carter RBS carb. I didn't notice any difference in performance between using either carb on the 200.

I am a member of a website www.fordsix.com, where there are a lot of folks interested in older Ford sixes. Scroll down the menu and select "Vintage Ford Sixes". Most folks in the last few years seem to have a great interest in the 215/223 variety, but you should find lots of information on the 144/170 in that forum.
